Top poets to get honors in Ehrmann competition

TERRE HAUTE — Wabash Valley Outdoor Sculpture Collection and Arts Illiana are hosting a public awards ceremony to honor the winners of the 2013 Max Ehrmann Poetry Competition at 5:30 p.m. on April 19.

People living, working or attending school in Clay, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo Counties were encouraged to submit poems inspired by, about or in some way related to the Wabash River, its watershed, other rivers or water as it impacts our lives, as part of 2013 Year of the River celebration.

Chris Forhan, an Indiana poet, judged the competition, which included 349 poems received from 312 people.

Originally from Seattle, Wash., Forhan is the author of three books of poetry: “Black Leapt In,” winner of the Barrow Street Press Poetry Prize; “The Actual Moon, The Actual Stars,” winner of the Morse Poetry Prize and a Washington State Book Award; and “Forgive Us Our Happiness,” winner of the Bakeless Prize.

He has won a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and two Pushcart Prizes. He lives in Indianapolis with his wife, the poet Alessandra Lynch, and their two sons, Milo and Oliver. He teaches at Butler University.

Through the competition, Art Spaces and Arts Illiana encouraged the writing of new poetry as a contemporary art form rooted in tradition, promoting connections between art forms, and honoring Ehrmann, a treasured regional poet whose works were inspired by a love for his own community, its natural surroundings and the people who call it home.

The 2013 Max Ehrmann Poetry Competition is sponsored by Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College with additional support from Big Picture, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, The Golden Frame, Indiana State University, Vigo County Education Foundation, Vigo County Historical Society and Wise Pies Pizza & Subs.

The awards ceremony will be hosted by Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on April 19 in the Rooney Library. Winning poems will be read at the event, and Forhan will read some of his own works.

The awards ceremony is free and open to the public. For more information, call 812-235-2801 or visit www.wabashvalleyartspaces.com, or 812-235-5007 or www.artsilliana.org.
