Swope honors noted local artist, educator, first board president

TERRE HAUTE — Continuing the yearlong celebration of the museum’s 70th anniversary, the Swope Art Museum presents “The Art of William T. Turman,” an exhibition of the work of the noted local artist, educator and first president of the Swope’s board of managers. Sponsored by Century 21 Advantage, the exhibition is on view Friday through Oct. 20 in the museum’s Education Gallery.

“The Art of William T. Turman” features paintings from the Swope collection and from Indiana State University, where Turman headed the art department for many years until his retirement in 1934. Turman’s paintings reflect the people, history and landscape of the Wabash Valley area as well as those he encountered during his extensive travels.

He is perhaps best known for impressionist landscapes that he often painted outdoors. Turman’s expertise as a prolific artist and dedicated educator and administrator made him the ideal person to lead the launch of the new Swope Art Museum. The paintings in the exhibition illuminate the artistic impact of this important figure in local culture.

“The Art of William T. Turman” opens Friday during the museum’s free “First Friday: Returning to Our Roots” from 6 to 9 p.m.

Don Monroe, an artist whose career was inspired by Turman’s paintings, and Susie Pierce, director of the Graysville Academy in Graysville, which has a permanent display of Turman’s work, will speak at 7 and 8 p.m.

Open and free to the public since 1942, the Swope Art Museum houses one of the Midwest’s premier collections of American painting, sculpture and works on paper. Edward Hopper, Andy Warhol, Thomas Hart Benton, Grant Wood, Charles Burchfield, George Bellows, George Luks, John Sloan, Mary Fairchild MacMonnies, Harriet Frishmuth, Frederick MacMonnies, Anna Hyatt Huntington and Robert Rauschenberg are all represented in the Swope’s collection, which spans the early 19th century to the present.

The Swope Art Museum is at 25 S. Seventh St. in downtown Terre Haute. For more information visit www.swope.org or call 812-238-1676.
