Halcyon exhibition features USI art faculty’s work

TERRE HAUTE — Throughout April, Halcyon Art Gallery is presenting an invitational exhibition featuring the work of art faculty from the University of Southern Indiana, Evansville.

Titled “A Perspective of Contemporary Measure,” the exhibition will be on display through April 26 at the gallery, 25 S. 7th Street, next to the Swope Art Museum on the corner of 7th and Ohio Streets.

The USI faculty will showcase their artwork in the areas of art education, art history, ceramics, graphic arts, painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture and three-dimensional design.

Participating artists include Chuck Armstrong, Sarah Bielski, Joan DeJong, Brandon Gardner, Alisa Holen, Rob Millard-Mendez, Xinran Hu, David Huebner, Katie Waters and Kristen Wilkins.

The exhibit will be displayed in Halcyon’s north gallery.

In Halcyon’s east wing, functional and sculptural ceramics by Halcyon curator Ray Chen will be on exhibit. It is titled “The Language of Form and Communication.” Of his work, Chen says: “Pottery is an art form and is a personal language with energy. It is an existing transformation of  space and value. The power and energy of life is essential. My work both expresses and conveys Chinese tradition and it also shares my profound life experience. I value form and space as I do the relationship between internal and external; one cannot exist without the other. Form and space distinguishes interpersonal relationships. This vision also represents of Eastern and Western cultural influence.”

In addition, the gallery’s upcoming Saturday artist talk series is to feature: how an artist learns from reviewing individual work and from critical voices, Saturday; how to produce landscape drawings and process with mixed materials on April 20; and how to combine layered imagery, humor, fine craft, and gently poke at art theory on April 27. The discussions are from 2 to 4 p.m.

Halcyon Art Gallery events are free and open to the public.
