‘Scattered’ explores one of nature’s most powerful forces

TERRE HAUTE — An innovative mix of dance, theater and film explores one of nature’s most powerful forces when Motionhouse brings its show “Scattered” to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s Hatfield Hall on Saturday, March 29.

On its second world tour, Motionhouse is one of the premier modern dance theatre companies in the United Kingdom. The company is well-known for its integration of athletic dance and multimedia elements into large-scale outdoor shows, including carefully choreographed productions incorporating construction equipment and a full-scale replica of a ship.

Kevin Finnan and Louise Richards have co-directed Motionhouse since its founding in 1988, with Finnan in the role of artistic director. The group has performed extensively throughout Europe and is currently on its second U.S. tour. In addition to directing Motionhouse, Finnan served as choreographer and movement director for the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

With “Scattered,” Motionhouse explores the majesty and savagery of water, blending movement and film as dancers perform on a curved wall reminiscent of a skateboarder’s half pipe.

Using projection created by award-winning Spanish filmmakers, Logela Multiedia, the show looks at the ways in which humans interact with and depend on water. Through the integration of film and movement, dancers immerse themselves in images of cascading waterfalls, hang suspended over a frozen landscape and dive into arctic waters.

The performance is enhanced by the original music of composer Sophy Smith and atmospheric lighting by Natasha Chivers.

“Scattered” appeals to a broad audience with its visuals and use of aerial silks and bungee action. The show combines Motionhouse’s highly physical dance theater and aerial imagery with film and graphics to create a unique event.

Tickets are $18-$22 for adults and $10 for students, and may be purchased at hatfieldhall.com, by phone at 812-877-8544 or in person at the Hatfield Hall ticket desk.
