Community Theatre offers up family show ‘Babes in Toyland’ in December

Community Theatre of Terre Haute celebrates the season with the holiday musical, “Babes in Toyland,” based on the operetta by Victor Herbert & Glen MacDonough. It opens this Friday and continues through the weekend.

Additional performances are Dec. 12-15. Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances begin at 8 p.m., with Sunday matinees beginning at 2:30.

The musical is directed by Joshua Hoffman, with musical direction by Jacob White.

This family-friendly musical brings your favorite nursery rhyme characters to life on stage. It takes place right before Christmas in Toyland, and the taxes are due on Christmas Eve. The evil Barnaby (Douglas Lunn) hires the bumbling thugs, Rodrigo and Gonzorgo (Lester McGee and Shaun Woolard), to kidnap an unsuspecting Tom the Piper’s son (Dan Rodriguez). Tom is betrothed to the show’s heroine, Mary Mary Quite Contrary (Jennifer Vela), but Barnaby wants her for himself. Barnaby also has the duo steal the sheep belonging to Mary and Bo Peep (Halea Chubb), so their family won’t have the money to pay taxes — another reason Mary will have to marry him.

The other nursery rhyme characters go to the forest to find the sheep, but they are arrested. They are taken to Toyland, where the Toymaker (Chuck Shutt) is frantically trying to get the toys ready in time before Christmas. The children help the Toymaker make the toys, but it turns out that Toyland also owes taxes. Barnaby shows up again in another attempt to force Mary to marry him. Overseeing all the fun and adventure, of course, is Mother Goose (Laura Reed).

The cast has close to 35 members, with about 20 of them under the age of 18. This particular production is a family show for two reasons: first, because children of all ages will enjoy it, and second, because so many family members are part of the cast and crew. Shutt is joined in the cast by two granddaughters, Maggie and Libby Shearer, and wife Jean is working on props. Two sets of sisters are in the cast: Michaela and Mollie McKee and Ashlea and Halea Chubb, with mothers Chrissy McKee and Brenda Chubb helping with costumes. Vela’s son, Tristan, plays Little Boy Blue. Terri and Colleen Fulk are a mother-daughter duo in the cast. Brother-and-sister pair Miller and Maxine Bough are also in the cast, while their mother, Susan, is working on props. Additionally, husband and wife Rance and Sandy Fuqua worked on the set.

The ticket office is open this week from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. as well as one hour before show time. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students and youth.

Community Theatre is at 25th and Washington streets. Learn more at www.ctth.org or call the ticket office at 812-232-7172.
