Camps packed with activities, experiments, science lessons

TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute Children’s Museum will host a variety of camp programs this summer.

The camps, which are sponsored by Duke Energy, are packed with themed activities, experiments and lessons from all areas of science. The camps are for children entering kindergarten and first grade and camps for children entering second through fourth grades, and all of them are designed to inspire children and awaken their curiosity in the exploration and interaction with science and technology.

Camps will be 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday during the weeks of June 16, June 23, June 30, July 7, July 14, July 21 and July 28, and each of the camps will include a variety of hands-on, educational activities designed according to the camp’s unique theme.

Students can choose from the following camp weeks and themes:

• Mad Science, June 16-20: Science is all around us, but what is the best part about science? Watching and doing it for yourself! During this camp, children entering second through fourth grades will put on some safety goggles and see what happens when we mix different substances together. Use your knowledge to make conclusions about different mystery powders. This camp is for the young, curious scientist looking for explosive fun.

• Messy Science, June 23-27: Science is all around us, but the best part is getting messy with science. During this camp, children entering kindergarten through first grades will put on some safety goggles and learn about different solids, liquids and gases. Guess what will happen when we mix different substances and even watch things blow up. This camp is for the young, curious scientist looking for explosive fun.

• Science Busters, June 30-July 3: Who wouldn’t want to bust some myths? During this camp, children entering second through fourth grades will be testing myths and busting even the most common myths. They will be creating ways to test these myths through building and creating. This camp is for the creative thinking builder who loves to be a mythbuster.

• Junior Explorers, July 7-11: This camp is for children entering second through fifth grades who are adventurous at heart. Want to learn about beautiful birds and exotic animals that live in the rainforest? How about the polar bears and penguins that love the cold? Learn about several different ecosystems and the reptiles, birds, insects and mammals that call them home. Dive into the ocean, trek through the jungle, explore the desert and discover many different lands.

• Art Experiments, July 14-18: Who knew science could be used in creating a masterpiece! This camp is for children entering kindergarten through first grade. The interactive camp will include getting a little messy with paint and color explosion, recycle materials to make something brand new, and use foam and crystals to be the ultimate science artist.

• Sampler Science, July 21-25: Sampler Science is perfect for children entering second through fourth grades who are interested in learning about all areas of science. Bust myths, learn about cool chemical reactions, travel to exotic destinations to learn about animals and even create art using science.

• Little Samplers, July 28-Aug 1: Little Samplers is perfect for children entering kindergarten through first grade who are interested in learning about all areas of science.
