Covered Bridge Festival kicks off today

ROCKVILLE — It’s time again for one of Indiana’s largest events, the Parke County Covered Bridge Festival. This 10-day countywide event always starts on the second Friday in October and this year takes place today through Oct. 17. The festival offers activities and events countywide, and the shining stars are Parke County’s 31 historic covered bridges.

Headquartered on the courthouse lawn in Rockville since 1957, the event features food, shopping, demonstrations, and entertainment. A large tent and streets around the courthouse will feature more crafters and vendors than previous years from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Free entertainment is scheduled on the south side of the courthouse throughout each day. Bus tours leave daily at scheduled times from the Courthouse Square, giving visitors the opportunity to view covered bridges and make stops along the way.

The Parke Players Melodrama this year is “Egad, The Woman in White” presented nightly at the Ritz Theater in Rockville. Billie Creek Village, home of three covered bridges, is open daily. Bloomingdale Friends make apple butter at the Friends Meeting House. Bridgeton offers many crafters and vendors along with a mill and the Bridgeton Bridge. Mansfield is another place to shop along with the opportunity to visit the roller mill and the Mansfield Bridge. Visit the Mecca Bridge with a tent nearby full of handmade and homemade items. Montezuma has a complete schedule of daily events, including a hog roast. Florida Township Civic Center in Rosedale offers a variety of treasures. Tangier is known for its famous “Buried Beef” and is a delicacy that guests won’t want to miss.
