Concert to weave art into melodies at ‘Artistry & Rhythm’ event

TERRE HAUTE — Works of art have inspired composers through the ages to write music that interprets or translates visual art into music. Arts Illiana, the Wabash Valley Art Guild and the Terre Haute Community Band are focusing on that relationship to present “Artistry & Rhythm” Saturday in Fairbanks Park.

The Art Guild will present its 12th annual Art in the Park show that features an artists’ market in and around the Blumberg Shelter. Art in the Park will take place from noon to 6 p.m.

An invitation has also been issued to artists to “paint the river,” a “plein air” paint-out event in which artists will register their canvases or other materials from 10 to 11 a.m. and then choose a spot in the park along the banks of the Wabash to paint the river. At 4 p.m. the paintings will be juried for possible inclusion in a future exhibition. Arts Illiana is hosting a fish fry tent that will feature catfish sandwiches and chips. The tent will be open from noon to 2 p.m. for lunch and from 5 to 8 p.m. for dinner.

The Terre Haute Community Band will take the stage in the amphitheater at 8 p.m. to present a concert themed around color and works of art.

“Art in the Park” by Robert Shelden is a four-part suite and a strong example of music written to describe specific works of art.

The first part is “Le Cycliste,” which describes a painting by Gino Severini, an Italian painter and a leading member of the Futurist movement, depicting the style known as cubism.

The movement “Shadowed Stream” represents a piece by John Singer Sargent, an American artist. The piece is described as aquarelle, French for watercolor.

The third movement, “Excavation,” is an example of the sgraffito technique by William de Kooning. This style has been around for hundreds of years and consists of putting down a preliminary surface, covering it with another and then scratching the superficial layer so that a pattern or shape emerges.

“Transfiguration” by the Italian Renaissance master Raphael is a classic style of chiaroscuro, which uses strong contrasts between light and dark.

The “Blue Goose Rag,” “Amber Waves of Grain” and “Purple Carnival” are among the more colorful tunes that incorporate a color into the title. “Graceful Ghost Rag,” “One Life Beautiful” and “Salute to American Jazz” are representative of different genres of music. “Bolivar” gives the band the opportunity to feature a solo by principal trombonist Norman Hanson.

Yvonne Newlin is now in her 10th year as principal conductor of the Terre Haute Community Band.
