TERRE HAUTE —
Hatfield Hall at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology will close out its 10th anniversary performing arts series with world-renowned vocalist Nathan Gunn at 7:30 p.m. on May 2.
Gunn is part of a group of modern opera baritones, dubbed “barihunks” for their chiseled good looks and impressive physiques, which often earn them roles with shirtless scenes.
Upon being named one of People magazine’s “Sexiest Men Alive” in 2008, Gunn told the Orange County Register, “It's kind of funny; flattering, too. Mostly I was glad they didn't rank me. I caught a lot of flak from my buddies, of course. But I think something like that is good for my business. It helps break down those old outmoded stereotypes about opera.”
Gunn has appeared internationally in some of the most revered venues internationally, including the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Paris Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, Glyndebourne Opera Festival, Theater an der Wien, Teatro Real in Madrid and the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels.
He has performed as the title roles in “Billy Budd,” “Eugene Onegin,” “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” and “Hamlet.”
“It’s an absolute thrill to have someone of Mr. Gunn’s artistic stature here at Hatfield Hall,” said Bunny Nash, Hatfield Hall performing arts manager.
Accompanying Nathan Gunn will be his wife, pianist Julie Gunn. Both are alumni of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, where he is currently a professor of voice, and she is an associate professor of accompanying.
He can also be seen in the PBS presentation of “Live from Lincoln Center: Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel with the New York Philharmonic” at 9 p.m. on Friday.
Tickets for the Hatfield Hall performance are $30 to $34 for adults and $20 for students, available in person at the Hatfield Hall ticket desk or by calling 812-877-8544. Ticket desk hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, as well as two hours before events. For more information, visit hatfieldhall.com.
