Hot Pursuit 5K scheduled Oct. 17
The 2009 THPD Hot Pursuit 5K Run/Walk will be on Oct. 17 at the World Gospel Church, 900 Gardendale Road. Registration will be at 7 a.m. with the race beginning at 9 a.m. Awards will be presented to the top three finishers in the following age groups: 13 and under; 14-18; 19-24; 25-29; 30-34; 35-39; 40-44; 45-49; 50-54; 55 and older.
Registration fees are as follows: Registration plus a T-shirt: $15; registration plus a hooded sweatshirt: $35; registration plus a T-shirt and a hooded sweatshirt: $42. There will be an additional $4 charge for late registration. The pre-registration deadline is Oct. 12.
Register early to reserve your T-shirt or hooded sweatshirt. The supply of extra T-shirts and sweatshirts will be limited on race day. Proceeds will go to the Indiana COPS (Concerns of Police Survivors), which benefits the families of officers who died in the line of duty.

Motorcycle Ride coming up
Second Annual Motorcycle Ride sponsored by American Legion Post 515 will be Oct. 3. Registration starts at 8 to 10 a.m. at Martinsville, Ill., Fairgrounds.
Points of interest are stopping at the Filling Station in Toledo for some of their homemade pie (Dutch treat), Lincoln Cabin in Charleston, and Mill Creek in Marshall.
Door prizes will be handled out at the end of the ride. A $5 donation per rider would be appreciated. Proceeds will go to Boy Scout Troop 82 to be used for a White Water Rafting Trip in 2010.

Music of the ‘Sinatra Era’ in concert
The Banks of the Wabash Chorus presents “Music That We all Love” at Harmony Hall, 1257 Lafayette Ave., in Terre Haute, at 7 p.m. Nov. 7.
The Banks of the Wabash Chorus will perform, with Championship Quartet Interchange. Rob Verostko will also present music from the “Sinatra Era.”

Vincennes
VU Community Series kicks off
Vincennes University’s 2009-10 VU Alumni Community Series kicks off Saturday with a performance by pianist Richard Glazier, featuring his Tribute to Judy Garland.
Tickets cost $15 for adults, $13 for seniors, $12 for VU employees and retirees, and $7 for students. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door. To purchase tickets in advance, call (812) 888-4354.
Glazier was trained in the classics and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano performance from the Indiana University School of Music and a doctorate in Musical Arts from the Cleveland Institute of Music.
Glazier has become one of today’s foremost interpreters of the American popular songbook and probably most closely associated with music of George and Ira Gershwin and it has been said that “Richard Glazier has Gershwin in his soul.”

Dueling Pianos
benefit set Monday
The second 2009 Dueling Pianos Benefit will be Monday at the Vigo County Fairgrounds. All proceeds from the benefit will be donated to the Terre Haute Children’s Museum.
The doors will open at 6 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres from 10 local food vendors served until 8 p.m. Performers from Howl at the Moon in Indianapolis will provide the evening’s entertainment from 7 to 11 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the door or prior to the event at the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce, cash or check only. Vincennes
VU Gala Concert slated for Oct. 7
The Vincennes University Music Department will present its annual Gala Concert at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 7.
The performance will be at the Red Skelton Performing Arts Center on the VU campus at 20 Red Skelton Boulevard. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.
Students and faculty will perform in solo and ensembles including the VU Concert Band, Woodwind Ensemble, Concert Choir, Brass Ensemble, VU Connection, Jazz Ensemble, and Percussion Ensemble.

Artists’ reception at Coffee Grounds
Two local artists invite the public to a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 2 showcasing their art at the Coffee Grounds at 423 Wabash Ave.
Jane Dusanic and Jo Anne Perigo Fiscus have been active in art projects for several years and would like to share some of their most recent projects with the public. Music will be provided by guitarist Dan Lampton.
Both artists are members of the Wabash Valley Art Guild and have taken an active part in the Guild’s annual exhibits and have exhibited and won awards for their work in several venues. In addition, they both are regular participants in the Street Fair, sponsored by Arts Illiana, and the Guild’s own Art in Deming Park.
Their first joint show will last through the month of October at the Coffee Grounds.

Symphonic Band, Orchestra concert set
The Indiana State University Symphonic Band and Wind Orchestra will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Tilson Auditorium.
John Boyd, director of ISU Bands, will conduct the Wind Orchestra in four works — Yasuhide Ito’s “Festal Scenes,” which the group performed in 2001 during a trip to Tajimi, Japan; Johann Bach’s “Fugue in G Minor, BWV 578,” dedicated to Glen Bainum, John P. Paynter and Frederick Miller; Bach’s “Fantasia in G Major, BWV 572,” dedicated to famous conductor Frederick Fennell; and Ron Nelson’s “Medieval Suite.”
Doug Keiser, associate director of ISU Bands, will conduct the Symphonic Band in Robert Shelton’s “Flight of the Piasa,” “On a Hymnsong of Phillip Bliss” by David Holsinger, Frank Ticheli’s “An American Elegy” and Brant Karrick’s “Bayou Breakdown.”
This year marks the 85th anniversary of the Indiana State band program. The concert is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the concert provided by ISU’s Kappa Kappa Psi chapter.

At the Opry
This Saturday night at 7 see The Crown Vics at The Boot City Opry. Pop the clutch and set the clock to rock, because The Crown Vics are taking the world of 1950s rock ‘n’ roll by storm. The Crown Vics recreate the energy and style of the legendary bands of the ’50s to a tee. Tickets are $11.
Middle Eastern Festival set
Middle Eastern Festival at St. George Orthodox Church, 1900 S. Fourth St., will take place from noon to 7 p.m. on Sunday. Look for the festival tent and walk into an excursion of tables laden with mouthwatering Kibby, grape leaves and cabbage rolls, meat and spinach pies, rice with orzo, hummus with tahini, and pickled turnips. A special vegetarian menu will be available along with Syrian salad drizzled with lemon and oil.
There will be hundreds of pastry items to choose from including queen of all pastries, Baklawa, and all kinds of home baked goods, including herb breads.
Watch cooking demonstrations by award-winning author Helen Corey of Terre Haute. Watch how to make bread and tabouli. There will be a special middle east coffee corner; also get your name written in Arabic script shopper’s corner with icons, books, DVD’s, music tapes and more children’s activities. Take a church tour by the Rev. David Moretti and Deacon Louis Corey.

Pig Out at fundraiser
Pig Out at the Annual Pig Roast to benefit United Campus Ministries from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. The event will be held next door to UCM at Centenary United Methodist Church, 301 N. Seventh St.
