September, October packed with festivals, parades, fall shows, events

TERRE HAUTE The Wabash Valley has much to offer in terms of fall festivals. Get out and enjoy one of the many events that make the Valley unique.

Want to know where to start? Today concludes the Mansfield Cornbread Festival & Outdoor Sportsman Show.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with free demonstrations, gun and knife show, food, beans and cornbread, flea market, arts and crafts, covered bridges and the mill. Shops are open. There is no admission charge. And the location is handicap accessible. For more information visit www.mans

Following are a list of events through October:

Sept. 12-13: Hymera Seafood Festival, Old Soldiers Reunion, downtown Hymera, Sullivan County. Flea market, craft booths, entertainment all day, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.; serving seafood dinner from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. No admission charge. Handicap accessible.

Sept. 17-20: Sullivan County Rotary Club Corn Festival, Courthouse Square, Sullivan. Corn on the cob and other food, arts and crafts, carnival, nightly entertainment. No admission charge. Handicap accessible. Call (812) 268-6386.

Sept. 11-13: 36th Annual German Oktoberfest. A German fall celebration at 9th and Cherry streets in Terre Haute with music and dancing, crafts, German bratwurst, sauerkraut, German potato salad, beer and refreshments including desserts. Sept. 26-28: Jasonville/Shakamak Homecoming Celebration, Friday, 4:30 p.m., chili supper, Community Center; 7 p.m. Sycamore Strummers, Lion’s Club Building; Saturday, 6 a.m., pancake breakfast, Lion’s Club Building; 8 a.m., flea market and craft bazaar, Main Street. Als a parade, alumni banquet, class reunions and softball tournament, other entertainment.

Sept. 26-28: Cory Apple Festival, fire department/community center, Cory, Clay County. Craft booths, flea market. Friday: hog roast. Saturday: fish fry. Sunday: chicken and noodles. Oct. 17, 18 and 24: Haunted Halloween Happenings, 7:30 to 10:30 p.m., Deming Park. $2 fee per train ride or hay ride. Call Tornor Center at (812) 232-0147.

Oct. 10-19: Parke County Covered Bridge Festival, Bridgeton, Mansfield, Mecca, Montezuma, Billie Creek Village, Rockville, Rosedale, Tangier. A 10-day festival where these communities celebrate Parke County’s 32 historic covered bridges. Hours: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. No admission charge. Call (765) 569-5226.

• Rockville (Festival Headquarters): Tents filled with handmade crafts encircle an 1879 courthouse. Sample cooking and take guided bus tours of Parke County’s covered bridges. All bridge routes begin here. 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call (765) 596-5226.

• Billie Creek Village near Rockville: Turn-of-the-century craftsmen demonstrate their skills. Three covered bridges, live entertainment, horse-pulled wagon rides, crafts, food. Open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. during festival. Admission charge. Call (765) 569-3430.

• Bridgeton: A dam and spectacular waterfall near a working grist mill. Also an 1878 house, artists, weavers, food. Call (765) 548-2136 or (765) 569-5226.

• Mansfield: Historic village offers more than 1,500 vendors. The 1820s water-powered grist mill is on the National Register of Historic Places; also an 1867 covered bridge. Call (765) 653-4026 or 653-4782.

• Mecca: Two historic schoolhouses, covered bridge, and an old clay tile factory site. Crafts, food and dancing on the bridge. Call (765) 569-5392.

• Montezuma: Historic river town and home to the Wabash-Erie Canal bed. Aztec trading post, arts and crafts, trail rides, hog roast. Call (765) 569-5226.
