Taste of India 2008 coming to Hulman Center on Sept. 14

The Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE The India Association of Terre Haute is hosting its Taste of India 2008 from 5 to 9 p.m. Sept. 14 in Hulman Center.

The evening will include music, dance and food. Proceeds from the event will benefit the American Red Cross Wabash Valley Chapter. Tickets are $30 per person and $15 of that amount is tax deductible.

Tickets are available at branches of First Financial Bank, Old National Bank and Terre Haute Savings Bank; Gopalan Contemporary Art, 9 S. Seventh St.; Ultimate Health and Fitness, 380 W. Honey Creek Drive; or by calling B. Rao Kopparty at (812) 298-9515 or Krishna Vedala at (812) 299-5808.

“The American Red Cross Wabash Valley Chapter is extremely honored to be the beneficiary of this year’s Taste of India,” said Carol Stevens, chapter executive director. “The Taste of India is an important cultural event in our community that also gives back. The money raised from this event will be used to help provide emergency immediate help to local disaster families such as food, clothing, short-term lodging, critical medications, eyeglasses, personal hygiene supplies, cleanup kits and mental health support.”

The American Red Cross Wabash Valley Chapter serves Clay, Greene, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo counties in Indiana and Edgar County, Ill.

Terre Haute home to several Indian families

“From India to Indiana,” as Narsi Patel, professor emeritus of sociology of Indiana State University, describes in his book “Indian Community at the Crossroads,” several Indian families have made Terre Haute their home.

The first known Indian to arrive in Terre Haute was a student at Indiana State University in the early 1950s. Since then, from a trickle to a steady stream, several Indians, among them professionals, physicians, businessmen, academicians and students, have moved to Terre Haute.

With a few members, India Association of Terre Haute was started in 1969 as a community organization. Since then, the number of Indians and Indian families has grown many folds in Terre Haute and the association has a sizable membership.

As a way of giving back to the community and serving the Wabash Valley and Terre Haute community, the India Association of Terre Haute has been organizing the annual “Taste of India” since 1986 to benefit local charities.

This year, the India Association of Terre Haute plans Taste of India 2008 for Sept. 14, in Hulman Center to benefit the Red Cross Wabash Valley Chapter. The event will begin at 5 p.m. with dinner at 7. This year, the event will have several activities including numerous performances of traditional dance, a silent auction, a raffle and door prizes.

More information is available at the Web site of the association, www.indath.org.
