Get ‘INShape’ for free at a state park, reservoir

INDIANAPOLIS — In support of Gov. Mitch Daniels’ INShape Indiana statewide health initiative, Indiana state parks and reservoirs will waive entrance fees for INShape Indiana participants Saturday.

The purpose is to encourage participation in organized walks and other events to promote good health practices. Events, times and locations vary, but each location offers the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and get exercise at the same time.

Hoosiers registered as INShape Indiana participants at INShape.IN.gov will receive a coupon, via e-mail, entitling them to free admission Saturday to the park or reservoir of their choice. The coupon must be presented at the entrance gate for free admission. Coupons will be e-mailed to registrants Friday.

At each location, the event will include a drawing for several free drawstring backpacks and annual entrance permit to state parks and reservoirs that is valid for the remainder of 2008. Dick’s Sporting Goods, the Indiana State Department of Health and the Governor’s Council for Physical Fitness and Sports sponsor the event, along with DNR.

Daniels launched INShape Indiana in 2005, challenging Hoosiers to make healthy choices. The free, Web-based program provides statewide information on physical fitness activities, nutrition and smoking cessation. INShape Indiana not only serves as a clearing house but provides quarterly activities such as 10 in 10 and Ready, Set, Walk!

Robert E. Carter Jr., director of the DNR, said this event is a great way to enjoy some of the state’s most beautiful areas at a scenic time of year and blow off some steam.

“This is our sixth INShape Indiana DNR Day, and we are proud to continue our support of Governor Daniels in this important effort. Our Hoosier state parks and reservoirs feature great natural resources, ranging from giant sand dunes to deep, rocky canyons. It’s a great time to be outdoors in Indiana and a hike is a great way to burn off a few calories.”
