Weekend Watermelon Festival offers tasty fun

MANSFIELD — The Mansfield Village Watermelon Festival in Mansfield is slated for Saturday and Sunday.

The annual event includes activities for all ages.

The Mansfield Idol singing competition will start at 1 p.m. under the pavilion at Mansfield Parke. Participants in two age groups (youth and adult) will complete for the title, cash prizes and a chance to sing their winning song at Mansfield Parke events over the next year.

Sunday morning begins with a church service at the Creekside Chapel with free entertainment (music) on the deck overlooking the waterfalls.

For an ice-cold slice of watermelon or a chance to win the seed spitting contest or watermelon eating contest, guests to the village should stop at the Mansfield Village Welcome Center downtown for complete information about the weekend events. Besides an entire weekend of watermelon and competition-related events, visitors to Mansfield can browse through the village shops and vendors set up throughout town, sample foods available all weekend, take a free tour of the Mansfield Roller Mill, and enjoy the Mansfield Covered Bridge along Big Raccoon Creek.

Campers are invited to stay at Mansfield Parke for $12 a night, which includes electric plus access to the restroom and shower house.

Mansfield Village is less than an hour west of Indianapolis in southern Parke County, six miles south of U.S. 36, just off the east side of Indiana 59. Mansfield is north of Brazil on Indiana 59.
