Historical Society plans ‘A Hard Times Party’

Fundraising party remembers the ’30s

Special to the Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE On May 17, the Vigo County Historical Society stages the first of two fundraising parties remembering the 1930s: “A Hard Times Party,” which portrays the atmosphere that prevailed during the Great Depression after the stock market crash in 1929.

This will not, however, be a somber party. The band “Easy Street” with vocalists Amy Schorr and Gary Greiner will entertain with music and songs popular in the 1930s. Enjoy such songs as “I’ve Got Rhythm”; “Brother, Can You Spare a Dime”; “Stardust”; and “Stormy Weather.” Partygoers also will be entertained by recorded radio skits, such as Fibber McGee and Molly, Burns and Allen, and Inner Sanctum. A silent auction is being planned and prizes will be awarded for best “Hard Times” costumes.

It is not necessary to dress in costume for the party.

Since bread lines were prevalent during the hard times of the ’30s, the party will follow that theme and serve a variety of delicious soups, breads and desserts during the evening. A cash bar will be available.

The Hard Times Party begins at 7 p.m. in the 4-H Pavilion at the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds. The building was chosen because it is large enough to accommodate the 1930s Ford vehicle, which is being raffled at the October “Happy Days” party. Another attraction that will be displayed in the building is a Gilkison camper, a pop-up camper manufactured by E.P. Gilkison & Sons in Terre Haute from 1925 to 1952. Two years ago, Debbie Baker-Dailey a California resident, contacted the Historical Museum asking if they would be interested in having her family’s “Gilkie” for the collection. The Society accepted with pleasure. Very few Gilkies still exist, so it will be fun to see this one exhibited.

Reservations for the Historical Society’s party may be made by calling (812) 235-9717. Tickets are $50 per person.
