Wabash Valley ‘Relay’ dates announced

Special to the Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE Where can you celebrate cancer survivorship, remember loved ones lost and fight back against cancer? The answer lies in an American Cancer Society Relay For Life event near you.

“Relay is such a unique event. This year we will be incorporating the new theme of Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back. giving everyone who visits Relay a chance to do just that – celebrate, remember and fight back,” said Julie Hansen, area executive director, American Cancer Society.

Each Relay event offers participants and visitors an opportunity to celebrate the victory of area cancer survivors during a Survivors Lap. Those lost to cancer are remembered during the poignant Luminaria Ceremony. A special Fight Back Ceremony gives everyone the chance to proclaim their way of taking action against the disease.

The 2008 American Cancer Society Relay For Life season is supported regionally in the Terre Haute area by the Tribune Star, WTWO, Hi99, Union Hospital and Rose-Hulman and in the Lafayette area by Artistic Media Partners, WLFI, the Journal & Courier, Lilly Tippecanoe Labs and Faith, Hope and Love Cancer Center. Donations can be made to your local Relay For Life event by visiting www.relayforlife.org and clicking on Find Relay Events.

As the Society’s signature event, Relay has been bringing cancer survivors and anyone touched by the disease together for more than 20 years. Held overnight in honor of the fact that cancer never sleeps, Relay For Life has grown from a single event in Tacoma, Wash. that raised $27,000 to the largest grassroots movement nationwide. More than 4,800 communities throughout the U.S. now host an American Cancer Society Relay For Life event and have raised more than $2.6 billion dollars for the fight against cancer.

The American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by saving lives, diminishing suffering and preventing cancer through research, education, advocacy and service. Founded in 1913 and with national headquarters in Atlanta, the Society has 13 regional divisions and local offices in 3,400 communities, involving millions of volunteers across the United States.
