High school students’ artworks on display in exhibit at ISU

TERRE HAUTE — In conjunction with Terre Haute Human Rights Day (April 18), artworks by high school students from four counties will be exhibited in the Gallery Lounge of the Hulman Memorial Student Union Building at Indiana State University.

The works will be on display from Tuesday through April 27, open to people attending all Human Rights Day activities, as well as during regular daytime gallery hours during the run of the show (7 a.m. to midnight, opening at 9 a.m. on the weekends).

Human Rights Day, an annual event in Terre Haute, is co-sponsored by Indiana State University, other area universities, the Vigo County School Corp., and community groups. It is composed of keynote speakers, panel discussions, performances and an art exhibit. The events of the day, including the student art exhibit, are free and the public is encouraged to attend. The art exhibit “Freedom Through Expression” includes works by students from Rockville Jr./Sr. High School in Parke County; North Vermillion and South Vermillion high schools in Vermillion County; South Putnam High School in Putnam County; and McLean Education Center and the Juvenile Justice Center in Vigo County.

Students were asked to consider the subject of freedom of expression in the context of human rights and to approach the theme in a broad and imaginative sense that would have personal meaning for them. Pieces in the show include paintings, drawings, photographs, ceramics and mixed media works.

One winning entry was selected from each of the four counties. The 2007 winners are Erica Veach, a junior at McLean Education Center, for her mixed media sculpture, “The Bright Side Life”; Autumn Alexander, a sophomore from South Putnam High School, for her mixed media sculpture, “Trapped”; Shauni Bennett, a sophomore from Rockville Jr./Sr. High School, for her mixed media collage, “Be Yourself”; and Chloe Jennings, a senior from South Vermillion High School for “Destination Denied,” a mixed media collage. The top winner was Katie Richards of Rockville Jr./Sr. High School for “Individuality,” a papier-mâché and mixed media sculpture. Each of these students will receive a cash award.

The winners were selected by Mary Ann Michna, curator at the Sheldon Swope Museum of Art, and Crystal Vicars, Indiana State University Art Gallery assistant.

Other participating students include: Becky Myers, Ashley Thomas, Nathan Lunsford, Amy Laznik, Jordan Russell, Gretchen Southwick, Summer Wyres and Jessica Dugger from South Vermillion High School; Trina Taylor, Luke Waltz, Jon Remler, Makaley Wilson and Kelsey Hartman from Rockville Jr./Sr. High School; Hye Jeong Jeong, Heather Lone and Allie Hayden from South Putnam High School; Ciarra Thompson, Gwyn Vicars, Clint Burney, Garrett Walker, Dimitri Morson, Amanda LeClaire, Jackie Hughes, Audrey Lee, Zach Swartz, Jacob Allen, Andrea Harden, Kellie Knauer, Austin Boling, Riley Delp, Abbi Montgomery, Zach Swayze, Joe Burton, Dustin Tolbert, Jessie Stout, Malori Rudolph, Sunni Allen, Nathan Hinote, Jordan Arrasmith and Josh Fitzwater from North Vermillion High School; Crystal Moody, Mary Sill, Lindsey Wilkinson, David Latham and Kelly Slusser from McLean Education Center; and eight students from the Vigo County Juvenile Justice Center.
