John England delivered smooth vocals on his band’s bouncy, foot-shuffling song “Open That Gate” last year. Folks in the world of Western swing music paid attention. England, a Terre Haute native, won the Will Rogers Award for Best Male Singer at the Academy of Western Artists 2009 Awards Show on Sept. 22 at Garland, Texas.

Terre Haute’s Eva Kor featured in book on notable Hoosier women
Eva Mozes Kor, founding director of CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center, is one of 19 women honored in Michael S. Maurer’s book, “19 Stars of Indiana: Exceptional Hoosier Women.” Kor and 12 others featured in the book attended a reception in April at Maurer’s home in Carmel.
