Independent Music Awards winner to perform at The Woods

---- — Margy Frazier, a junior at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, remembers the first time she heard The Speedbumps. Erik Urycki’s sincere lyrics and breezy voice started as a whisper before soaring to the rafters.

Then it was full-on band time as the guitar, cello and the upright bass kicked in and picked up the pace. Heads nodded, bodies swayed and hands clapped. For Frazier, and many others, the band left a distinct impression.

“Using string instruments and vocals, they create a sound that is indescribable,” said Frazier, who, as the president of the college’s student activities committee, arranged for the band to play on campus last semester.

Now this critically acclaimed indie rock band is back, ready to rock the Wabash Valley on Sept. 5 in the SMWC Little Theatre in Guerin Hall.

The concert starts at 8 p.m. and is free and open to the community.

“If you like good music and fun people, you’ll enjoy The Speedbumps,” Frazier said. “They play a mix of music — oldies, current hits and originals.”

The Speedbumps, recently featured on American Public Television’s “Road Trip Nation,” use classic instruments to create a new sound. A 2011 Independent Music Awards winner, the band has opened for many national headliners, such as Crosby, Stills and Nash, Amos Lee and G-Love and Special Sauce.

Their eclectic and organic tunes have rocked festivals all over the world, including the Kent State Music Festival and Australia’s One Movement for Music Festival.

“The Speedbumps play a delightful mix of music,” Frazier said. “They involve the audience, encouraging clapping and singing along — creating an unforgettable concert.”
