Indiana

Fourth of July photos could mean prizes

Shutterbugs who have a Facebook account and document their Fourth of July weekend fun at an Indiana state park or reservoir can win a prize valued at up to $50 during a photo contest called “Shoot and Share.”

Just take a picture and post it in the fan photos album on Indiana State Parks and Reservoir’s Facebook page for a chance to win a $50 CampIN gift card, good for camping at an Indiana state park or reservoir, or a 2009 annual pass. Prizes for first, second and third place will be awarded.

Photos will be accepted until midnight on July 16, but must have been taken at an Indiana state park or reservoir July 3-5, 2009. Photos can be of scenery, wildlife or any legal activity at an Indiana state park or reservoir. Submissions are limited to three per person.

Mayberry Classic coming up July 11

The fourth annual Mayberry Classic is 8:30 a.m. July 11 at Goshorn Park in Clay City. This is a 5K run or a 5K walk for ages 6 and up. There will be a 1-mile Fun Walk for all who want to participate. Awards will be given for the top three male and female finishers in six age groups. The course will also use chip-timing devices. The cost is $15 for adults and $10 for children ages 6-14 and includes a T-shirt.

Registration forms are available at the Clay City Center for Family Medicine, 315 Lankford St., Clay City, or by download from the Richard Lugar Center for Rural Health Web site: www.lugarcenter.org. There will be an additional $5 charge in each category if you are not pre-registered. Pre-registration is encouraged.

1960 Corvette being raffled off

Support the Terre Haute Humane Society and help animal rescue by participating in a raffle.

Win a 1960 Corvette, a white roadster with red interior and black top. It has a 4 speed manual transmission, taillights formed into the rounded rear fender and “heavy teeth” in the front grill.

The first Early Bird drawing — there are four in all — set for today, is for a three-day, two-night Las Vegas trip. Winner chooses the date. The prize includes two tickets on Southwest Airlines.

NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet set July 25

The Greater Terre Haute Branch of the NAACP is planning the 2009 Annual Freedom Fund Banquet. The banquet is set for 7 p.m. July 25 at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. It will feature television star Judge Greg Mathis.

Hole-y-One golf event in September

The Sisters of Providence of St. Mary-of-the-Woods seventh annual Hole-y-One Golf Scramble is planned for Sept. 18. There will be morning and afternoon shotgun starts. Register early to receive first choice. The event is staged at Hulman Links Golf Course.

Cost is $300 per foursome or $75 per single player. Cost includes lunch, golf and refreshing beverages throughout the day. Sponsorships are available.

Jonah fish fry on tap for Saturday

Daughters of the Nile are sponsoring a Jonah fish fry from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Zorah Shrine, 420 N. Seventh St. Cost is $7.50 for adults and $3.50 for children. Dessert is available for an extra charge.

St. Ben’s Community Festival coming up

St. Benedict Church will host its 12th annual Community Festival from 5 p.m. to midnight on July 10 and 11 at Ninth and Ohio streets. A kickoff lunch will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 10. Food and specialty desserts will be served. An indoor flea market will also be open at this time.

Activities will include family games, casino games, indoor flea market, food booths, beer garden, cash and quilt raffles and a 50/50 raffle. Hauteans in Motion bicycle rally is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Saturday. For more information, go to www.hauteans-in-motion.org.

Live entertainment includes Hot Rod Lincoln, playing ’50s through ’90s rock ’n’ roll at 5 p.m. and Dave and Rae performing from 3 p.m. to midnight July 10.

On July 11, entertainment will kick off with Mojo Gumbo at 5 p.m. The band is known for performing Louisiana party music with accordion and rub board, vocals, percussion, guitar and bass. Then Fabulous Imports will play from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Children’s Summer Theater starts July 10

Barbara Shimer, director of theater at Lincoln Trail College, has announced the casts for Children’s Summer Theater productions of “The Jungle Book (Kids)” and “Beauty and the Beast Junior.”

Cruise for Cancer Saturday at park

Trails of Life Cruise for Cancer 2009, is Saturday at Deming Park. There will be dash plagues for the first 100 registered vehicles. Registration is from 9 a.m. to noon with the show from noon to 3 p.m.

Awards will be presented at 3 p.m. There will be trophies and plaques for to the top 20. Music will be provided by a DJ, with door prizes, food, and a 50/50 drawing. There is a $10 registration fee.

Trails of Life is a nonprofit organization that is 100 percent volunteers, and gives back to cancer patients through prepaid gas gift cards. All proceeds and donations go to help less-fortunate cancer patients.

R.E.M. to release live digital EP

R.E.M. will release a live digital EP, titled “Reckoning Songs From The Olympia,” through iTunes and all digital service providers on Tuesday.

The EP features live versions of four songs from the band’s beloved second album Reckoning that were recorded during R.E.M.’s “working rehearsals” at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre in July 2007. The track-listing is “Harborcoat,” “Letter Never Sent,” “Second Guessing,” and “Pretty Persuasion.”

The EP will give fans a preview of what’s to come when the band releases R.E.M. Live At The Olympia as a two-CD set this fall. R.E.M., which is singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck and bassist Mike Mills, performed a special five-night residency — dubbed “working rehearsals” — at the fabled Irish venue to test out new songs for their 2008 studio album “Accelerate,” which was produced by Grammy award-winning producer Jacknife Lee and topped multiple charts its first week of release.

“Reckoning Songs From The Olympia” comes on the heels of the 25th anniversary of “Reckoning,” which was released April 9, 1984. This June 23, the band released a deluxe edition of the album, featuring a bonus disc with eight of its 10 songs recorded live in Chicago in 1984, to celebrate the occasion.

The Paris Community Hospital/Family Medical Center Relay For Life Team is having a Battle of the Bands from noon to 8 p.m. July 11 at the American Legion in Paris, Ill.

Admission is $5 per person. First-, second- and third-place prizes will be awarded.
