TERRE HAUTE — Diversity of background flavors the Republican ticket for Vigo County at-large seats this spring.

Voters choosing the GOP ballot will select three of four primary candidates to face Democrat counterparts in the November General Election.

Craig A. Bales, 49, said he hopes to represent the community’s conservative values.

“I’d like to run for council because I bring a conservative voice to the table,” the West Terre Haute resident said.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, serving 1981-1985, and the Indiana National Guard, 1989-1990, Bales was a heavy equipment mechanic and presently works at Honey Creek Machine as a CNC machinist.

Bales said overall, the County Council is fairly conservative, and his own political beliefs fall more in line with those of Terre Haute’s Republican Mayor Duke Bennett than prior city administrations. The husband and father of four, who ran for Vigo County Council’s 2nd District two years ago, said he hopes to win a seat this time and keep the community on the right fiscal path.

Local businessman Steve Ellis, 40, likewise wants to make a contribution to Vigo County.

“I thought it would be good to get involved more on a public-service level,” said the owner of Terre Haute Martial Arts Academy and Top Guns. “Born and raised here, the community’s given a lot to me, and I’d like to give a little back.”

The husband and father of two cited his experience as both a business owner and taxpayer, adding he understands the needs of Vigo County from multiple perspectives. Making good financial decisions are imperative for community growth, he explained.

Lonnie Moody II, 37, said he’s no stranger to the campaign process.

“I have a drive for politics. This will be my third time to run for it, to campaign,” he said.

Presently unemployed as he maintains custody of his three children, the single father said his prior work experience involves the management of local tobacco stores. A group of friends continue to support his campaign, and Moody maintains a Facebook page “Lonnie Moody 2 For County Council” with followers. If elected, he’d like to focus on better managing the tax dollars coming into Vigo County.

“In general, I think Vigo County can do better. There’s a lot more opportunities for this community,” he said. “They need people in there who are for the people, not in there for the paycheck.”

Bill Treadway, 45, chairman of the Vigo County Republican Party, rounds out the ticket.

A professor of history and natural science at Indiana Wesleyan University, the husband and father of four noted he has a fifth child on the way, expected in early July.

“The main reason I’m running is I live in, and grew up in, the community,” he said, explaining that gives him a vested interest in fostering its success.

Politicians don’t create jobs, he said, but as an elected official, one can help make the community as attractive as possible to investors, developing a business-friendly environment. Making Vigo County the kind of place in which companies want to grow is high on his list of objectives, he said.
