TERRE HAUTE —
Both candidates for Vigo County Recorder pledge to make necessary upgrades to the office to make it more functional and efficient.
The Vigo County recorder, who is responsible for the recording of deeds, mortgages, liens and other important documents for the county, earns a yearly salary of $43,155. The office is in the Vigo County Annex at 199 Oak Street.
Democrat candidate Nancy S. Allsup, the incumbent, said during a recent interview that she thinks it is important to keep up with software to help decrease paperwork in the office. She said she already has been working with the computer programmers to make improvements in the indexing system.
Republican candidate Bruce H. Royer said one of the things he has been doing since deciding to run is “talking to other recorders around the state as to what they’re doing to bring their office into the 21st century.”
Royer said he has been developing a proposal that, if elected, he will take before the Vigo County Council “to do just that for the community.”
He said he will actively pursue computer upgrades to make recordkeeping more efficient and more accessible to other county departments and to Vigo County citizens.
Allsup said her qualifications for the office include her work ethic and her past few months in the office; she was appointed in June to take over after former recorder Ray Watts resigned.
“I just know that I will do the job and I will do my best … I am a hard worker,” Allsup said. “I get along with people great, and I feel like that’s an important part of public office.”
Royer said he is qualified because of his past leadership positions with several local organizations.
As for the campaign, Royer said, “It’s been a wonderful trip, I’ve met a lot of great people.”
