Tribune-Star Editorial: And another thing ...
Communities behind troops
It is with great pride — and a healthy dose of anxiety — that Indiana bids farewell and Godspeed to members of the 76th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, the 438th Chemical Company and the 38th Main Support Battalion of the Indiana National Guard. The units embark this week on a long-planned deployment to Iraq. In all, about 3,400 soldiers are participating in the deployment, the largest since World War II. For many among the troops, this will be a return trip to the Middle East war zone. The 76th previously served a combat tour in Afghanistan. The units are made up of members from around the state. Several are from Wabash Valley communities, including Terre Haute and Brazil. We join affected communities in wishing our troops all the best as they serve their country. We will greatly anticipate their safe return.
One more chance
The final legislative crackerbarrel session of the 2008 General Assembly is set for 10 a.m. until noon Saturday on the lower level of the Vigo County Public Library. In addition to presentations from the legislators attending, the public will have an opportunity to ask questions of their elected representatives. With the property tax reform issue still simmering, the session is sure to be lively and informative. We urge those interested to attend, and we commend the efforts of the sponsors of this series: Vigo County Public Library, League of Women Voters of Vigo County, Wabash Valley Central Labor Council, Vigo County Teachers Association, Wabash Valley Chapter of the Indiana Nurses Association, Taxpayers Association of Vigo County, and the WILL Center.
Onward, North Patriots
Congratulations are in order to the Terre Haute North Vigo High School Patriots — and retiring coach Jim Jones — on the team’s thrilling and unexpected victory in last weekend’s Class 4A boys basketball sectional at Martinsville. Hoosier Hysteria is in full force behind the Patriots, who will compete Saturday in the Seymour Regional against Evansville Reitz.
