Cellist to perform Oct. 28 at ISU

Cellist, performer and educator Aron Zelkowicz will perform three works for solo cello at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Recital Hall of Indiana State University’s Landini Center for Performing and Fine Arts.

The three cello suites by Benjamin Britten (opp. 72, 80 and 87) were dedicated to and premiered by renowned cellist Mstislav Rostropovich and are often considered the 20th century equivalent to the cello suites of J.S. Bach.

Zelkowicz has cultivated a repertoire that is classical and ethnic, familiar and obscure. He is the founder of the Pittsburgh Jewish Music Festival and recently completed his 10th season as director of the festival, which presents rare and diverse works from Jewish musical traditions to Pittsburgh audiences every spring.

He has performed at the Tanglewood, Banff, Aspen, Sarasota, Chautauqua, Colorado, and Sunflower music festivals, the New York String Orchestra and Juilliard Quartet Seminars, with members of the Emerson and Cleveland Quartets, and on European and American tours with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Zelkowicz received degrees from the Eastman School of Music, Indiana University, and SUNY Stony Brook, where his teachers included Anne Martindale Williams, Paul Katz, Steven Doane, Janos Starker and Colin Carr.

Admission to the event is free and attendance by campus and community members is encouraged. For more information, contact the School of Music at 812-237-2771.
