Check out ‘Stars In A Velvety Sky’ with the Brazil Concert Band June 29

The Brazil Concert Band will present “Stars In A Velvety Sky” on Sunday at the special time of 7:30 p.m. in Forest Park.

“Stars In A Velvety Sky,” by cornet soloist Herbert L. Clarke, was dedicated to John Philip Sousa.

Dr. Martin Dixon, trumpeter and retired emergency room doctor, will perform this solo.

Dixon, “The Flying Doctor,” pilots his own airplane from French Lick, where he is an owner of the Lake Patoka Marina, twice weekly to play with the BCB.

Conducting a portion of this week’s show will be Janelle R. Huber, band director at Red River High School in Grand Forks, N.D.

The BCB will honor American military veterans with “Armed Forces Salute” by Bob Lowden, “American Civil War Fantasy” by Jerry Bilik, “The Homefront: Musical Memories From World War II” by James Christiansen and observe the centenary of World War I with “Over There, A Selection of American World War Songs” by M.L. Lake.

A regiment of marches will include “National Emblem” by E.E. Bagley, “The Stars And Stripes Forever,” “The Liberty Bell,” “Manhattan Beach” and “Semper Fidelis” all by Sousa.

Rounding out this patriotic program are “The Fourth Of July” by John Cacavas, “Fugue On Yankee Doodle” by Sousa, “America, The Beautiful,” by S.A. Ward and arranged by Carmen Dragon, and the Walter Damrosch version of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

The band is under the direction of Matthew S. Huber.
