‘Mummies’ stay cryptic in answers to questions about themselves

TERRE HAUTE — Members of the funk-R&B band Here Come the Mummies apparently intend to take their true identities to the grave.

Their names remain “under wraps.” In advance of the band’s performance Saturday at the Zorah Shrine in Terre Haute, the Mummies’ publicist arranged an email interview with percussionist and vocalist Java (pronounced JAY-va) Mummy. It shed no light on the popular and humorous group’s actual history, but he did offer fun comments.

According to the publicity bio, Here Come the Mummies consists of Nashville, Tenn., music pros — perhaps session aces, including some Grammy winners. Their stage names have been changed to protect their various record label contracts. Java Mummy is joined by Eddie, K.W. Tut, Mummy Cass, Spaz, The Pole, Midnight, Mummy Rah and The Flu. They sing and play instruments in mummy bindings, from head to toe.

They perform mainly in the Midwest and South, and the Terre Haute gig is part of the band’s 2013 Cryptic Tour. Morning radio listeners will quickly recognize the Mummies from appearances on the “Bob and Tom Show.”

Saturday’s show is for ages 18 and up, and tickets to the 7:30 p.m. event are $17.50 for general admission. Tickets are available through TicketMaster.com or in person at the Shrine, open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays at the Shrine at 420 N. Seventh St.

Last week’s conversation with Java follows:

• Who were your musical and comedic influences?

“As a group, our musical influences are … literally all over the map. Personally, I agree with Duke Ellington: there are only two types of music, good and bad. These days, for comedic inspiration, we often turn to Archer, Flight of The Conchords, and The Family Guy.”

• What do the Mummies think of the popularity of “The Walking Dead” TV series? Do you watch, or have time to watch it?

“Honestly, I have never watched ‘The Walking Dead.’ Zombies are cool, if you are into eating the living. We, as loving mummies, don’t consume people, we just prefer little tastes.”

• If you could meet one funk star in person, living or dead, who would it be? And what would you say to them?

“Oooh, great question. I would opt for Sly Stone in a heartbeat. I would say, ‘Cough it up or say goodbye. … You never once paid for Thai food!”

• What should Terre Haute audience members expect from their Here Come the Mummies experience?

“This will be our fourth visit to Terre Haute. Expect many new songs (from our upcoming album, “Cryptic”) combined with our usual infectious energy and stage show. It is not to be missed.”
