Sinfonietta Pops rehearsals begin, concert Feb. 9

The Sinfonietta Pops Orchestra has begun rehearsals for the second half of its concert season.

Music director James N. Chesterson encourages all string players in the Wabash Valley area to consider performing with the sinfonietta. Musical selections may include compositions by classical composers, Broadway and film scores, jazz, swing and popular music of various time periods.

Auditions are not required, but players are expected to have at least a minimum of a high school level of competence on their instrument.

The first concert is scheduled for Feb. 9. The celebration of Valentine’s Day is considered a highlight of February, and themes of love and lovers are popular in films, books, plays and a variety of musical genres. Selections for this concert will include two favorites from George and Ira Gershwin, “Embraceable You” and “The Man I Love.” “Embraceable You,” which includes a flugelhorn solo, was published in 1930 and included in the Broadway musical “Girl Crazy.”

Another featured piece will be “Sophisticated Lady,” a jazz standard composed as an instrumental in 1932 by Duke Ellington and Irving Mills, to which words were added by Mitchell Parish. Other familiar selections will include “As Time Goes By” by Herman Hupfeld, “What I Did for Love” by Marvin Hamlisch and “Misty” by Johnny Burke and Erroll Garner.

The second concert is scheduled for March 23. Both concerts will take place at 3 p.m. in the Cecilian Auditorium at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students, and free for children under the age of 10.
