Great American Songbook concert Feb. 4 showcases singers, songwriters

In a celebration of great songwriters and singers, faculty and students of Indiana State University’s School of Music will bring to life a collection of well-loved standards during a free performance at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the University Hall Theater.

The program, part of the College of Arts and Sciences Community Semester Series, will pay homage to Indiana icons Cole Porter and Hoagy Carmichael, and also honor songwriters Irving Berlin, George Gershwin and Harold Arlen among others.

The recital will feature School of Music vocalists Trenton Baker, Abby Cunning, Kayla Norman, Shaina Moore, Mackenzie Tank and Kailey Turner and music faculty members Mark Carlisle, Colleen Davis and Christine Boone.

The singers will be backed by a jazz combo Faculty performing throughout the evening include Jimmy Finnie, percussion; Todd Gallagher, bass; Randy Mitchell, trombone; Rob Waugh, trumpet; Tim Doyle, guitar; and Ted Piechocinski and John Spicknall, piano.

The evening will include works such as “Over the Rainbow,” “The Very Thought of You,” “The Man I Love,” “Unforgettable,” “My Funny Valentine,” “Skylark,” “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “Time After Time.”
