Marie McGlone, a 16-year-old from Marshall, Ill., earned first-place honors once again in the 11-to-19-year-old division of the Illinois State Fiddle Contest. She was awarded a first-place trophy, a commemorative traveling trophy/plaque and $100. The plaque will bear her name on two permanent name plates, as Marie also won this division in 2012, in addition to displaying the names of all winners since 1985.
Because she won the 11-19 division, Marie was allowed to compete in the “open” division, where she also earned second-place honors in the state of Illinois overall. She was awarded a third trophy and $200 for this.
The contest took place for the 49th consecutive year on Oct. 20 in Effingham, Ill., at the Thelma Keller Convention Center, with 30 contestants competing. The contest is hosted by the Illinois Old Time Fiddler’s Association; Junior B. Hobson is president.
McGlone will perform with her band on Friday and Dec. 20 at the Oilfield restaurant, just north of Casey, Ill.
