While the Indianapolis Colts failed to add any cornerbacks among the 10 players selected during this past weekend’s National Football League draft, general manager Ryan Grigson and the team’s scouting department were able to snag three undrafted free agents to play the position.
The Colts added 15 additional rookies to the roster Monday, led by cornerbacks Cameron Chism (Maryland), Antonio Fenelus (Wisconsin) and Buddy Jackson (Pittsburgh).
Indianapolis also signed defensive end James Aiono (Utah), defensive end Kevin Eagan (Endicott), defensive tackle Chigbo Anunoby (Morehouse), offensive tackle Steven Baker (East Carolina), offensive guard Jason Foster (Rhode Island), linebacker Chris Galippo (Southern Cal), offensive guard Hayworth Hicks (Iowa State), safety Matt Merletti (North Carolina), safety Micah Pellerin (Hampton), wide receiver Jabin Sambrano (Montana), punter Brian Stahovich (San Diego State) and wide receiver Griff Whalen (Stanford).
Pellerin (6-foot-1, 195) has gotten the most mention as a undrafted signee from most observers. He was considered to be a potential middle- to late-round draft pick. He logged 51 tackles (29 solo) and had four interceptions, 15 passes defended and one forced fumble as a senior defensive back last season.
• Rookie mini-camp this weekend — The Colts’ 10 draftees and 15 undrafted free agents will take to the practice field Friday for the start of a three-day rookie mini-camp.
The workouts, which are closed to the public, will be the first time that top draft pick Andrew Luck will suit up for the Colts.
There will be two practices Friday and Saturday with a single session on Sunday.
• Veterans added to roster — The Colts also signed former Indoor Football League and UFL tight end Dominique Jones and claimed ex-Southern Illinois running back Deji Karim off waivers from Jacksonville.
Jones had a tryout with Indianapolis last week during the team’s three-day veteran’s voluntary mini-camp. Karim, meanwhile, spent the last two seasons with the Jaguars. In 23 games, he totaled 98 rushes for 290 yards and added 17 catches for 130 yards. Karim also served as a kickoff specialist, tallying 77 returns for a 24.7 average.
