Singing a passion for Colts’ punter, tight end

INDIANAPOLIS — For Indianapolis Colts punter Hunter Smith and tight end Ben Utecht, football is their chosen vocation. But singing is definitely their passion.

Smith, as a member of the contemporary Christian band Connersvine, already has a recording contract and has sung at various religious and secular venues around the country the past few years.

The group’s debut CD was released Oct. 23 and Connersvine — an acoustic-driven band which consists of Smith and friend Chris Wilson — have made appearances on numerous national television and radio programs in support of their music.

Smith and Wilson, who each write as well as perform, got together in 2001 and have been touring as a band ever since. Their musical collaboration, which grew out of their work as youth and young adult ministers on the southside of Indianapolis, led to a recent live performance on the Gospel Music Channel.

“Winning the Super Bowl has been one of the highlights of my life and career. It is completely humbling that God has allowed me to not only be a part of an amazing football team, but also is giving me the chance to pursue his calling in music.” Smith said recently. “I feel just as strong of a call to worship leading and ministering through music as I do in football.”

A few days after the Colts posted a 29-17 win over the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI last January, he and Wilson went into the recording studio to begin work on their first CD.

“I know some people might think all this [the recording contract] came about because of the Super Bowl, but we had already signed the agreement and had songs written and ready to go long before we even knew that we were going to be in the Super Bowl,” the Notre Dame alum said.
