Colts notebook: Sanders making progress

By Tom James
Tribune-Star Correspondent

INDIANAPOLIS Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders spent Tuesday meeting with nationally-recognized orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews at his clinic in Birmingham, Ala., and the news reported to coach Jim Caldwell has him optimistic about Sanders, although no timetable for his return has been announced.

Andrews performed surgery on Sanders’ right knee this past spring. The former NFL “Defensive Player of the Year” has been on the Colts’ physically unable to perform list since the start of training camp.

“[Sanders is] doing well. Dr. Andrews has looked at him and really feels he’s on target and coming along. He’ll be there for a couple days and when he comes back, he’ll continue on with the process he’s going through here in terms of his rehab,” Caldwell said.

“He’s making progress. He’s moving forward. He feels good about where he is. Dr. Andrews feels good about where he is. That means I should feel good about where he is.”

• Vinatieri rehab coming along well — Placekicker Adam Vinatieri continues to make progress in his rehab from offseason knee and hip surgeries. Vinatieri is also on the Colts’ PUP list.

“He is making real good progress. He’s working diligently at being ready. He’s moving along quickly,” Caldwell said, adding that he doesn’t expect any problems working with a new holder. Rookie punter Pat McAfee has taken over that role from former Indianapolis punter Hunter Smith.

“You know how important that timing is. That is something we are just going to have to work out. As [Vinatieri] starts to ramp up his activity, it’ll all start to work together at some point. By the time he takes the field, those problems will be ironed out.”

• Injury list — Among those sitting out Tuesday’s workout were cornerback Michael Coe (groin), cornerback Jacob Lacey (undisclosed), offensive tackle Jaimie Thomas (knee), running back Mike Hart (ankle), defensive end Raheem Brock (hand), cornerback Jerraud Powers (undisclosed), cornerback Kelvin Hayden (hamstring), wide receiver Sam Giguere (leg), and safety Matt Giordano (groin).

Cornerback Marlin Jackson (knee) is expected to start and get some work Saturday against the Lions. The status of quarterback Jim Sorgi (hamstring) won’t be known until the end of the week.

“There is chance [that Jackson will play]. I would anticipate that he will unless something out of the ordinary happens now and then. But we certainly anticipate that he’s going to get some playing time,” Caldwell said.

“We plan to get [Sorgi] out there on the field and give him some movement activity and hopefully increase it during the week and get a sense of where he is come game time. We’ll make our decision from there.”

• Edge to the Seahawks — Manning was happy to see former Indianapolis running back Edgerrin James get another chance to play in the NFL. James, who began his career as the Colts’ top draft pick in 1999, was released by the Arizona Cardinals last spring. According to reports, James agreed to a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks on Monday. James had yet to report to Seattle as of Tuesday.

“I was happy to see that. I’ve been in contact with Edge. He’s big into text messaging. He told me that he wanted to wait and see if the right situation arose. He told me he was talking to New Orleans earlier. The last time I talked to him, he said nothing was on the radar and said this may be it,” the Colts quarterback said.

“I was happy to see that he got signed, and he’ll be coming to Indy [the Seahawks will play at Lucas Oil Stadium on Oct. 4], which I think will be kind of neat for all of our players, but for our fans, too, to see him back in Indianapolis.”
