TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman reclaimed the Clabber Girl Trophy for the first time since 2009 with an 80-74 women’s basketball victory over Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College on Tuesday night in Hulbert Arena.

Junior Lauren Meadows led four Rose players in double figures with a career-high 23 points. Junior Kelsey Ploof added a double-double of 14 points and 17 rebounds for the Engineers.

Freshman Addie Johnson joined Meadows by matching a career-high point total with 15 points. Freshman Andi Evers rounded out the Rose-Hulman double-figure scorers with 12 points.

Senior Brittany Shaner led The Woods’ attack with 18 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Chelsea Weaver and Kristina Bruce joined Shaner in double figures with 13 and 11 points respectively.

The even contest featured Rose with a narrow edge in rebounds (43 to 42) and turnovers (25 to 28), but seven blocked shots and 44-percent shooting from the field kept The Woods within striking distance.

Rose-Hulman jumped out to a 14-2 lead at the 15:24 mark of the first half on back-to-back three-pointers by Evers and two layups by Johnson. The Pomeroys quickly closed to within five points at 16-11 on a basket by Shaner at the 12:46 mark.

The Woods continued the charge and took a 21-20 lead at the 8:21 mark on scores by Shaner and weaver. Rose scored four straight points to take a 28-24 lead on two free throws by Ploof, before Shaner knotted the score at 30-30 with two free throws at the 2:25 mark.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods appeared to take a lead into the lockerroom following a score by Sierra Lopez at the 19-second mark of the first half that put the Pomeroys ahead 34-32. Freshman Cassidy Cain answered with a three-pointer on the final possession to give Rose-Hulman a 35-34 lead at the break.

In the second half, Rose maintained a narrow margin for the first five minutes before two free throws from Johnson gave the Engineers a 58-51 edge with 12:21 remaining. The lead hit nine points at 64-55 on a layup by Meadows and again at 68-59 with 7:54 left on a score by Johnson.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods charged back to within five points on two occasions. Weaver hit a free throw to make the score 71-66 at the 4:41 mark, with Shaner adding a conventional three-point play with 1:58 left to bring the score to 75-70.

Following an Engineer turnover, Brandi McDaniel scored in the paint to bring Saint Mary-of-the-Woods within 75-72 with 1:33 remaining. Johnson answered with two free throws at the 57-second mark, then after a missed three-pointer by Shaner, Cain hit two more charity stripe tosses to give Rose-Hulman a 79-72 edge with 41 seconds left.
