ISU baseball team builds on success with 14-2 rout

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State’s baseball victory over Alcorn State on Friday would take on more meaning Saturday if the Sycamores could build momentum and pick up on the good work they did in Friday’s ninth-inning rally.

Mission accomplished.

The Sycamores were aggressive from the opening inning at the plate and starting pitcher Devin Moore gave them eight valuable and effective innings on the mound as ISU defeated Alcorn State 14-2 at Bob Warn Field.

“It was a really good experience for everybody. It felt great to finally come out here and put some things together. It’s also really nice when your offense puts a lot of runs on the board,” Moore said.

Moore’s eight innings of work were as valuable as gold to an ISU team that is short on quality arms due to injury and ineffectiveness. He didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning and one of the two runs he conceded was unearned.

“He did what he needed to do. With Daniel [Peterson] hurt, we need as many guys as we can [today]. He did a really nice job,” ISU coach Rick Heller said.

Due to ISU’s ability to get on-base — something it’s struggled with all season — Moore could be more aggressive in his approach.

“[With the hits] … you could go out there and attack people. That should be your mentality anyway, no matter what the score is, but it’s a lot easier when you have the run support,” Moore said. “It’s just a good feeling all-around.”

ISU had a whopping 28 runners reach base safely. The Sycamores had 11 base hits, but reaped the benefits of a generous Alcorn State pitching staff that issued 15 base-on-balls. Two more Sycamores reached via error or hit batsman.

As generous as the Braves were, ISU was aggressive from the start and six of its base hits were in the first two innings.

“It was super positive. We had talked before the game that after a tough loss [for Alcorn] we wanted to put some pressure on them and put some runs up right away. We had good at-bats early. Some guys squared some balls up,” Heller said.

The die was cast in the opening frame. After Landon Curry drew a leadoff walk and Derek Hannahs singled, Robby Ort drove Curry home with a single. Koby Kraemer then tripled home Hannahs and Ort to make it 3-0 before an out was recorded.

When an out was put on the board by Alcorn, it was a productive one for the Sycamores. Jacob Hayes’ sacrifice fly made it 4-0.

“When you get four in the first it gives you a lot of confidence because you know you have a guy like Devin on the mound who’s going to pound the [strike] zone. Hitting is all confidence. Getting those hits and runs early gives it to you,” Ort said.

A Hannahs sacrifice fly and RBI single by Ort in the second inning made it 6-0. ISU would go on to score at least one run in all but two innings of play. Ort provided the biggest inning with a three-run triple in a four-run seventh to make it 12-1. Ort tied a career-high with five RBI.

Ort was 3-for-5 overall. Kraemer and Hannahs — who extended his hitting streak to 13 games — also had multi-hit games. Kraemer had four RBI. Mike Fitzgerald and Curry each drew four walks.

“We were aggressive and got after it. We had some guys get some good swings in today,” Heller said.

ISU finishes its series with Alcorn at noon today.
