Metro roundup: Two HCAC honors for Engineers

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman picked up a pair of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference weekly honors Monday, with Kate Dangel named Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week and Eric Schaible the Special Teams Player of the Week for football.

Dangel was honored for the second time this season and the fifth time in her career after getting 65 digs in 11 sets as the Engineers earned conference wins over Anderson and Hanover.

Dangel leads Rose-Hulman with 420 digs for the season and has 1,431 for her career, eighth-best in school history. Currently 11-13 and 2-3 in the HCAC, Rose travels to California this week to play Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Pomona-Pitzer and Cal Lutheran.

Schaible averaged 45.7 yards per punt as the Engineers made up a 20-point deficit to win 34-26 at Bluffton on Saturday. It’s his third career Player of the Week honor but his first this season.

For the season he averages 41.6 yards per punt with 10 inside the 20-yard line and just three touchbacks. He is second in school history in punting average (39.2) and third in punts (201) and yards (7,874).

The Engineers, 4-2 overall but a league-leading 4-0 in conference games, are idle this week and host Franklin on Oct. 26.

Cross country

Pomeroys win — At Jacksonville, Ill., St. Mary-of-the-Woods won the Illinois College Invitational on Saturday as Logan Fry set a school record for a 6K run.

Fry was fourth overall in 23:12 while Erin Harnett (25:26), Sarah Hudson (26:22) and Corianna Frederick (26:35) all had personal bests.

ISU tied for second — At Port Clinton, Ohio, Indiana State is tied for second after two rounds of the 2013 Rocket Classic at Catawba Island Golf Club.

Marissa Uradomo had her best 18-hole score of 73 in the first round and had a 76 Monday afternoon to pace the Sycamores with 149. She is tied for third individually going into today’s final round.
