Metro roundup: RHIT’s Evans sets Div. III record in high jump

Louisville, Ky. — For the third time this season, Rose-Hulman senior Liz Evans topped the NCAA Division III all-time national record in the outdoor high jump Friday night.

Evans became the first athlete in Division III women’s high-jump history to clear 6 feet with her successful leap in the University of Louisville Cardinal Invitational.

The mark of 6-0 also is a provisional qualification for the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships slated for June 19-23 at Drake University.

Rose senior Tyler Hannan moved into potential Division III national qualifying range in the men’s 400-meter dash with a strong effort Friday as well.

Hannan ran the 11th-fastest time in Division III this spring and the second-fastest mark in Rose-Hulman history (47.95 seconds).

On Thursday, senior Trey Cahill placed fourth in the men’s hammer throw in the North Central College Gregory Invitational.

The final meet prior to the DIII nationals will take place next Friday at North Central College in Illinois. The NCAA Division III outdoor championships are scheduled for May 23-25 at Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Golf

n Sycamores honored — Indiana State senior Emily Dixon and sophomore Amanda Smith were named to the Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Golf Scholar-Athlete team, it was announced Thursday by the league office.

Dixon was named to the first team for the second time and carries a 3.97 grade-point average while majoring in athletic training. She entered the MVC championships with a 79.50 average through 18 rounds with 11 rounds in the 70s and finished in the top 20 in six of eight tournaments this season.

Dixon was a member of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll every semester eligible, named to NGCA All-Scholar Team three times (2010, 2011, 2012), a member 2013 Indiana State All-Academic team and was recently named 2013 Female Presidential Scholar Athlete of the Year at Indiana State. She also was named to MVC Academic Honor Roll and received the MVC Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award.

Smith was named to the honorable-mention team and carries a 3.48 GPA while majoring in sport management. She entered the MVC championships with a team best 78.9 average through 16 rounds this season with 12 rounds in the 70s.

Smith is a member of Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, was named to the 2012 NGCA All-Scholar Team and also was named to MVC Academic Honor Roll.
