METRO ROUNDUP: Shaw named finalist for National Coach of the Year

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman head coach Jim Shaw has been named one of 15 finalists for the 2013 Glenn Robinson National Coach of the Year Award, which will be named on Friday.

The finalists include Chris Bartley (Worcester Polytechnic Institute), Luke Flockerzi (Rochester), David Hixon (Amherst), Steve Howes (Catholic), Matt Logie (Whitworth), Mike Maker (Williams), Mike Miller (Alvernia), Todd Raridon (North Central), Michael Schauer (Wheaton), Bob Semling (UW-Stevens Point), Jim Shaw (Rose-Hulman), Tom Spanbauer (Cortland State), Johnny Tauer (St. Thomas), Kevin Vande Streek (Calvin), Bob Walsh (Rhode Island College).

Shaw led Rose-Hulman to a 24-4 record and its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament this season.  His accolades for the season included NABC Regional Co-Coach of the Year honors and status as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.

The team also tied a school record with 44 wins over a two-year span and won its first league regular season title since 1999.  Shaw’s coaching staff includes assistant coach Rusty Loyd and student assistant Blake Knotts.

The Engineers reached as high as No. 19 nationally this season and featured a second-team NABC All-American selection in junior Julian Strickland.

Softball

• Hoosiers beat Sycamores — At Bloomington, playing on national television for the first time in program history, the Indiana State softball team (11-21) fell 7-0 on the road to in-state rival, the Hoosiers of Indiana University (17-19) Tuesday.

ISU will play Illinois today.

The Sycamores found themselves behind early as the Hoosiers used three first inning walks to take an early 3-0 lead over Indiana State, recording three runs off no hits.

Baseball

• ISU to face Purdue — The Indiana State baseball team continues their seven-game road swing on Wednesday when the Sycamores travel to West Lafayette, Ind., for a matchup with the Purdue Boilermakers.

First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. from Alexander Field, a brand new facility for Boilermaker baseball this season. The game can be heard live on WIBQ-FM 98.5.

Indiana State (11-11, 3-3 MVC) and Purdue (10-14, 3-3 Big Ten) will play again in six days, meeting on Bob Warn Field at Sycamore Stadium on April 9 at 6 p.m.

Senior Tyler Fehringer will take the mound for ISU. The right-hander has a 3.94 ERA in three innings so far this season.

ISU leads the all-time series 33-28-2.

Track

• Jackson, Johnson honored by MVC — Indiana State sophomore Jonathan Jackson and senior Felisha Johnson were named Missouri Valley Conference Athletes of the Week in track & field it was announced Tuesday by the league office.

Jackson was named the MVC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week after he ran a career best 52.65 to win the 400-meter hurdles at the SIU Bill Cornell Spring Classic Saturday at Southern Illinois. The time is the eighth fastest in Indiana State history. The top three finishers all came from the fourth heat with Jackson defeated Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Dexter Schleis (52.88) and Southern Illinois’ Brett Kohler (53.17) to bring home the win. The sophomore leads the Valley in the event while ranking 36th nationally, 13th in the East, and third in the Great Lakes Region.

Johnson was named the MVC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week as she began her final outdoor season for Indiana State with a pair of victories at the SIU Bill Cornell Spring Classic this weekend, winning the discus throw on Friday and the shot put on Saturday. She also finished third in the hammer throw.

Johnson won the discus on Friday with a throw of 168-9 with teammate Mary Theisen second (163-5/4) and Southern Illinois’ Ashley Gaston third (159-6). The Sycamore out threw all-competitors in the shot put with a winning heave of 56-10.

Johnson leads the Valley in the shot put (first in the Great Lakes, first in the East and second nationally), ranks third in the Valley for the discus (fifth in the Great Lakes, sixth in the East and 26 nationally), and fourth for the MVC in the hammer throw (fifth in the Great Lakes, 15th in the East and 37th nationally).

    The Indiana State baseball team fell behind early and never could get the lead as host Canisius posted a 3-1 victory in the opener of a three-game series Friday at Demske Sports Complex.
    The Sycamores (24-11) and Griffins (21-13) will meet again at 2 p.m. today, but the venue will switch to Dwyer Stadium in Batavia, N.Y. The same two teams also will play Sunday back at Demske Sports Complex in a noon start.

    “We pitched well,” coach Shane Bouman said. “Both Taylor Lockwood in the first game and Yvette Alvarez in the second game threw great. When you pitch good and you play good defense and get some key hits, good things are going to happen.

    Thanks to a limited number of available offensive linemen — a group that will at least double in numbers in the fall with the addition of recruits and currently injured players — the Sycamores won’t have a full-scale scrimmage, but will still intersperse scrimmage plays (with officials) among other practice drills.
    “We’re thin,” coach Mike Sanford admitted after practice Thursday. “The scrimmage will be part of practice — probably 30 or 40 plays altogether. We only have five to seven healthy offensive linemen, so we can’t go [in a scrimmage format] for long stretches of time.”
