Metro Roundup: Big seventh inning propels Indiana State softball

The Indiana State softball team used a seven-run sixth inning to grab a 9-7 win over Missouri State in the Sycamores’ 2013 home opener Friday at Price Field.

“The biggest thing is to take care of home field,” ISU coach Shane Bouman said. “Our girls put in a lot of hard work and we really expect good things to happen. Finally today, all the pressure we put on people paid off in the end.”

The Bears got on the scoreboard first off two hits in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. The Bears then added two more runs in the top of the second to extend their lead to 3-0 after two innings.

Megan Stone cut into the Bears’ lead in the bottom of the second with a leadoff home run to center field, her fourth of the season, to make it 3-1, but Missouri State added one more run in the top of the fourth.

The Indiana State bats began to heat up in the bottom of the fifth when Morgan Allee hit an RBI single to score Kelsey Montgomery and cut the Missouri State lead to 4-2.

The Sycamores then scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 9-4 lead over the Bears. Missouri State tried to respond in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs, but could get no closer.

Allee finished the game 2 for 4 with three RBIs, while Stone was 2 for 3. Abbie Malchow was 1 for 2 with two RBIs and a run scored for the Sycamores.

ISU (11-15 overall, 2-2 Missouri Valley Conference) and MSU (10-15, 1-2) will return to action today when they play a noon doubleheader at Price Field.


n Paris 11, Cumberland 5 — At Toledo, Ill., Logan McDaniel pitched six innings for the win and Hunter Morris was 4 for 4 for the winning Tigers in high school action Friday.

Morris scored four times and had an RBI as Paris scored four runs in the top of the first and four more in the top of the third. Alex Elmore was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs, Cole Shonk was 1 for 3 with an RBI and Riley Spencer was 1 for 2 and scored a run for the winners.

Highlights — For Casey, Austin Glidewell was 3 for 5 with 2 runs and a stolen base; Shawn McCown 2 for 4 with a double and 4 RBIs; and Matt McCown was winning pitcher, striking out 11 in 5 innings, and was 1 for 1 with 4 walks, 2 runs and 2 RBIs. Seth Bland got the save, striking out 4 in the last 2 innings.
