Rose drops pair to Transylvania

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Transylvania withstood a second half charge by Rose-Hulman to earn a 60-46 men’s basketball victory in a battle of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference co-leaders Saturday.

With the win, Transylvania improved to 13-2 overall and 7-1 in HCAC play. Rose-Hulman fell into a second-place tie one game behind the Pioneers at 6-2 in league games (12-3 overall).

Sophomore Julian Strickland led the Engineers’ offense with 15 points. Sophomore Nate Gissentanner also reached double figures with 12 points.

Ethan Spurlin led the Transylvania offense with 20 points and Brandon Rash also reached double figures with 16.

Transylvania led 30-28 after a tightly contested first half. The Pioneers relied on a 15-3 run to start the second half to take a 45-31 edge on a score by Spurlin at the 13:18 mark.

Rose-Hulman answered with seven straight points to move within 45-38 with 10:08 left. Strickland buried a 3-pointer and a 2-pointer, with James Pillischafske adding a field goal in the rally.

Three free throws by Austin Weatherford brought Rose-Hulman within 48-41 at the 7:02 mark. Transylvania answered with nine straight points to take a 57-41 lead and secure the victory.

Rose-Hulman returns to action with a Wednesday home matchup against Franklin at 7:30 p.m.

Women’s basketball

Transylvania 65, Rose-Hulman 48 — At Lexington, Ky., Transylvania relied on a strong defensive effort and a solid second half effort to top Rose-Hulman on Saturday.

Nicole Coffman led the Pioneers with 26 points on 11-20 from the field. Jariana Gillespie and Alex McKenzie also reached double figures with 10 points each.

Freshman Sheree Williams led the Rose-Hulman effort with 14 points on 6-14 from the field. Senior Alisa Dickerson also reached double figures with 10 points.

Other key contributors for Rose-Hulman included sophomores Heather Finnell and Kelsey Ploof with eight points each.

Rose-Hulman (5-10 overall, 3-5 HCAC) will hit the road for undefeated and nationally ranked Franklin on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
