Strickland paces Rose-Hulman to win with 26 points

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman shot 54 percent from the field and junior Julian Strickland scored a season-high 26 points to lead the Engineers past Defiance 63-52 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball Saturday afternoon in Hulbert Arena.

Senior Brenton Balsbaugh provided support for Rose with 15 points and nine rebounds on 6-for-10 shooting from the field, senior Jon Gerken added eight points and 10 rebounds against his hometown team and senior Austin Weatherford added six points and a team-high five assists.

With the victory, Rose-Hulman improved to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the HCAC.

Logan Wolfrum led three Defiance players in double figures with 16 points. Mason Roth and Ryan Hicks added 11 points each.

The Engineers shot 55 percent from the field in the first half, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range, to take a 34-27 lead into the intermission. The tightly contested first half featured six ties and five lead changes.

Defiance closed within 36-32 on a 3-pointer by Roth at the 16:28 mark. The lead stayed at four points at 41-37 after another trey by Wolfrum with 13:02 left.

Rose relied on an 11-5 run over the next eight minutes to push its lead to 52-42 with 5:13 left on a layup by Weatherford. The lead reached a game-high 12 points at 57-45 on a 3-pointer by Strickland at the 3:52 mark.

Defiance closed within 59-52 before a layup and two free throws by Strickland provided the final margin of victory.

The Engineers will travel to Manchester on Wednesday. Defiance fell to 2-3 and 0-1 respectively.

In women’s basketball Saturday:

n Defiance 56, Rose-Hulman 50 — At Hulbert Arena, Rose-Hulman rallied from a 23-point deficit to close within two points in the final minute before Defiance College hit four late free throws to earn a win Saturday.

Junior Lauren Meadows keyed the rally with a team-high 19 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field. Freshman Andi Evers added eight points and eight rebounds for Rose.

Other key contributors included freshman Cassidy Cain with seven points, four rebounds and four assists; junior Kelsey Ploof with five points and five rebounds; and freshman Addie Johnson with five points. Junior Jaci Dalton added four points off the bench.
