SPRINGFIELD, MO. —
Behind redshirt junior Nick Petree’s two-hit shutout pitching, the Missouri State baseball team earned a 3-0 Missouri Valley Conference victory over Indiana State in the series opener Friday evening at Hammons Field.
The loss was the second in a row for ISU following its five-game winning streak, dropping the Sycamores to 11-9 overall and 3-1 in the MVC. Missouri State is 16-6 and 1-0.
The Bears broke the scoreless tie in the fifth inning, taking advantage of a one-out walk by Travis McComack. Joey Hawkins followed with a perfectly placed bunt single on the right side of the infield to put two runners on with one out, then both runners moved into scoring position on a passed ball by catcher Mike Fitzgerald. With two outs, Tate Matheny chopped a pitch toward shortstop Tyler Wampler, but Matheny beat out the play for an infield RBI single as McComack scored for a 1-0 MSU lead.
Indiana State junior Sean Manaea (3-2) pitched into the eighth inning, tossing 71⁄3 innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with five strikeouts.
Missouri State added two insurance runs in the eighth as Matt Dezort and Patrick Drake recorded back-to-back RBIs after the Bears loaded the bases.
Indiana State tallied just two hits off Petree — a one-out single by senior Casey McCurdy in the second and a lead-off single by redshirt senior Koby Kraemer in the seventh. Petree struck out a season-high 10 batters over nine innings.
Game 2 of the series is set for 3 p.m. EDT today at Hammons Field. ISU will send senior right-hander Devin Moore to the mound, while MSU will counter with freshman righty Jonathan Harris.
