METRO ROUNDUP: Rose-Hulman's nine-game winnings streak snapped

• Engineers compete — At Seymour, four Rose-Hulman golfers fired rounds in the 70s to highlight Saturday’s Day 1 of the Hanover Invitational.

Sophomore Sanders Park and freshman Tapat Wittayakom led the effort with scores of 76. Senior Travis Whithaus added a score of 77.

Freshman Luke Peoples contributed a 79 and sophomore Kent Kraus pitched in with a score of 82.

The second round is set for today.

Team scores — Davenport 293, Hanover 297, Wabash 306, Northwestern Ohio 306, Rose-Hulman 308, Manchester 308, Defiance 318, Anderson 368.

Tennis

Men

• Rose-Hulman 5, Transylvania 4 — At Lexington, Ky., Rose-Hulman earned its first win over Transylvania in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference era Saturday afternoon.

Rose also became the first HCAC team other than Earlham to defeat Transylvania in 10 years. The Engineers also captured their second all-time win and first victory since 2001 against the Pioneers.

Doubles — Benedict-Adam (RH) def. Albrecht-Buckman 8-6; Conrad-Moore (RH) def. Conner-Richardson 8-5; Ray Montgomery-Miller (RH) def. Mayborg-Haider 8-2.

Track

• ISU wins — At Charleston, Ill., the Indiana State men and women’s teams captured the Big Blue Classic championships this weekend.

The men won with 224.5 points to edge out host Eastern Illinois, which placed second with 174.5. Southern Illinois placed third with 138.5, Northern Iowa was fourth with 106.5 and Illinois State rounded out the top five with 85.

“We won over a very good Eastern Illinois team and avenged a loss to Southern Illinois from a week ago,” ISU men’s coach John McNichols said. “We had several great performances from John last night, Taylor Head in the steeple, David Timlin in the 1,500 and of course Greggmar in the 110-meter hurdles. Swift ran a great time in the cold weather and is running times that runners are running in much better weather.”

The women also won with 136 points, as Western Michigan placed second with 131.

“It turned out to be a great meet,” ISU women’s coach Angela Martin said. “We had some tremendous performances.”

Sophomore Katie Wise won the 100 in a season-best time of 11.34 seconds to break the facility and meet records. Her time was just a .01 second off of her personal best and currently ranks her seventh nationally. Her teammate, sophomore Demetra Camble placed second in a time of 11.81. Wise also won the 200.

On Friday night, Indiana State sophomore John Mascari set a school record in the men’s 5,000 with a 14:18.37 clocking and the victory.

The Sycamores will head to Champaign, Ill., next weekend for the Illinois Twilight meet at the University of Illinois.

Auto racing

• LP racing called — At Putnamville, the racing scheduled for Saturday at Lincoln Park Speedway was called off due to track and weather conditions.

It has been rescheduled for next Saturday. Weather permitting, a test-tune session is set for Thursday.
