Braves can’t hold on to early leads in final MIC baseball doublheader

INDIANAPOLIS —
Visiting Terre Haute South wrapped up its Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference high school baseball schedule Saturday with a pair of frustrating losses to Lawrence North in games played at Indianapolis North Central.
The Braves, who had early 3-0 leads in each game, failed to score after loading the bases in the top of the seventh inning of the opener, then were victimized by a pair of homers in a 5-4 eight-inning loss in which South outhit the Wildcats 10-4. Lawrence North rallied for an 8-3 win in the nightcap.
Zach Odum was 4 for 7 with a pair of doubles to lead South’s attack.

• Vikings second — At Portland, West Vigo finished second in Saturday’s Jay County Tournament, losing 6-5 to the host team, ranked seventh in Class 4A, by a 6-5 score in the championship game.
Tyler Wampler pitched a four-hit shutout in the first game as the Vikings beat Class A’s seventh-ranked Cowan 8-0. Jordan Pearson, Aaron Welch and Drew Aff homered, and Aff had four stolen bases for the day.

• Knights lose two — At Carmel, Northview fell in a tight 5-4 decision to Chesterton and in a 3-1 loss to Franklin Central in the Greyhound Classic. Chesterton scored two runs in the seventh to win, despite Ryne Barr’s 3-for-4 day at the plate. Against the Flashes, Zac Niehaus was 2-for-3 with a home run, but Franklin Central scored two in the fourth and made it stick.
Northview also fell to Fort Wayne Northrop 12-2 on Friday.
