The Indiana baseball team finished up a four-game sweep of Michigan State on Saturday with a 14-5 victory to earn a berth in the Big Ten Tournament for the first time since 2003.
The Hoosiers finish the regular season at 28-28 after registering their first Big Ten series sweep since 1999 against Northwestern. The Hoosiers will either be the fifth or sixth seed in the tournament, which will start Wednesday in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Terre Haute North grad Josh Phegley finished his regular season with a bang, going 4 for 6 with four runs, three RBIs and his 13th home run of the season.
The sophomore finished the regular season with a .436 average and 71 RBIs, each of which led the Big Ten. He also finished with 63 runs, which places him among the conference leaders.
The Hoosiers came out blazing in the first, putting five runs on the board to take a quick lead. Means led off with a single up the middle and moved up on a Chris Hervey sacrifice. Phegley then delivered an RBI single to bring home Means and make it 1-0. The RBI was his 43rd in conference play, breaking the previous conference record of 42, set by Mike Klimek in 1996.
The Hoosiers tacked on a run in the third on an RBI triple by Means, his second triple of the game to match the school record. In the fourth, Phegley led off the inning with a double and came home on a Sabourin single to make it 9-1. IU added another run in the sixth on Phegley's solo home run, his 13th of the season.
