TERRE HAUTE — Several Wabash Valley natives helped pace the University of Indianapolis to men’s and women’s team titles at the 2010 Great Lakes Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Allgood Bailey Stadium in Rolla, Mo.

The Greyhound men, who captured the 2010 GLVC indoor track and field title earlier this year, took top honors with 230 1/2 team points, bettering second-place Missouri S&T who finished with 196 1/2. The UIndy women accumulated 218 points during the two-day event, topping runner-up Lewis’ 192 1/2.

Two Terre Haute South grads scored points for the Indy men, as Josh Bridwell was fourth in the shot (49’ 6 1/4") and Ben Bertoli was fourth in the 400 hurdles (55.53).

South grad Christina Carrick ran the second leg of the winning 1,600-meter relay team, which won in a time of 3:54.08.

Carrick also placed fourth in the 400 in 59.29.

Bethany Schroeder of Greencastle placed in the long jump for the Hounds, adding a valuable team point with an eighth-place finish at 16-8 1/2.

In other track and field news:

• Wabash senior Emmanuel Aouad of Terre Haute North added four more All-North Coast Athletic Conference awards to his totals in his final conference meet, along with one new meet record.

Aouad won the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.52, edging the old meet record of 14.53 of Dwight Carter from Wittenberg in 1994. The time also broke Aouad’s own school record in the event of 14.68 set last season. He was also the individual champion in the long jump (6.87 meters; 22 feet 6-1/2 inches) and took third in the triple jump (13.21 meters; 43 feet; 4-1/2 inches).

Aouad ran second in the finals of the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.14.

• Clay City grad Adam Schroer qualified for the NAIA Outdoor Championships at Indiana Wesleyan from May 27-29 in the marathon.

• • •

• Shelton to IU-Southeast — White River Valley senior point guard Jared Shelton will continue his basketball career at Indiana University-Southeast in New Albany, where he will play for former University of Louisville player Wiley Brown.

Brown, who earned a national championship under hall of fame coach Denny Crum, took over the program three seasons ago.

"We’re getting a very good player that we’re very happy to get," Brown told the Greene County Daily World. "He’s going to fulfill some of our needs since we’re losing seven seniors this year."

Shelton averaged 14.0 points per game while connecting on 26 of 79 3-pointers last season, with 2.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

• Murphy, Davis honored — Southern Illinois-Edwardsville softball standouts Megan Murphy of Casey-Westfield and Whitney Davis of North Vermillion have been honored for their academic achievements.

Murphy has been named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District V team as a second-team outfielder.

Murphy was the leadoff hitter for most of the season for the Cougars. She recorded a .292 batting average and played in all 51 games this season, leading the Cougars to a 27-24 record in its second season with an NCAA Division I schedule.

She was second in hits with 45 and finished with 13 runs batted in and eight stolen bases.

Murphy, a sophomore, holds a 4.00 grade point average in nursing.

She was previously honored as an All-American Scholar and a member of the Dean’s List by SIU-E.

Davis, who has not yet declared a major, was also an All-American Scholar and was named to the OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
