Police: Driver without license kills 2 cyclists on bridge

HAMPTON, N.H. — A woman who crashed her car into a group of cyclists on a bridge Saturday morning, killing two of them, had been pulled over on that same bridge hours earlier and ticketed for driving without a license, police said.

Darriean Hess, 20, was stopped at 12:45 a.m. Saturday while crossing a bridge in this New Hampshire coastal town. Police said a radar gun clocked her going 59 mph in a 30 mph zone.

When asked to produce a license, she told police she didn't have one. She was ticketed for that, along with speeding, police said.

Later that same morning around 8:30 a.m., Hess was traveling southbound over the bridge when she veered into a group of bicyclists in the northbound lane, police say. The bicyclists were participating in the 40th annual Granite State Wheelmen Tri-State Seacoast Century when the fatal collision took place.

Pamela Wells, 60, of South Hamilton, Mass., and Elise Bouchard, 52, of Danvers, Mass., were killed in the accident. Uwe Uhmeyer, 60, of Essex, Mass., and Margo Heigh, 54, of Danvers, Mass., were both injured and transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

As of Monday, no charges had been filed against Hess, as police continue their investigation into what prompted her to veer across the road.

As part of its investigation, police obtained a blood sample from Hess that is being examined for alcohol and other substances. They also confiscated her cell phone.
