TERRE HAUTE The Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, directed by David Bowden, will feature Joyce Wilson, flute; Martha Krasnican, keyboard; and Andrew Ling, violin, in its next concert.

The concert is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Tilson Auditorium on the campus of Indiana State University. Sponsors of the concert are Fifth Third Bank, David and Jerry Mitchell and Fuson Pontiac, Buick, Cadillac and GMC. “Concert Conversations with David Bowden” precedes at 6:45, when Bowden will talk about the music that will be played in the concert and provide an up-close-and-personal visit with the director.

The themes of Alexander Borodin’s “Nocturne for String Orchestra” may not be a title that you recall, but the music will be. “Canon in D,” by Johann Pachelbel, will be another piece with a well-known sound. Also on the program are “Pizzicato Polka” by Josef Strauss and Johann Strauss Jr.; “Serenade No. 6 in D Major, K. 239” by W.A. Mozart and Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade in C Major, op. 48.” Local musicians will be the featured artists of the “Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D. Major, BWV 1050.”

Wilson, studio flute, is a member of the ISU Faculty Wind Quintet, the Faculty Chamber Winds, and is principal flutist with the THSO. Wilson earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, and master’s of music and doctor of musical arts degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition to extended flute study with Robert Cole at the University of Wisconsin, she has studied with Robert Willoughby at Oberlin, with Donald Peck of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, with Nelson Hauenstein of the University of Michigan and Kenton Terry of the Philadelphia Orchestra. She is the recipient of two study grants, a Kellogg Foundation Award for study at Chautauqua Institute with James Pellerite, and a Rockefeller Foundation grant for the study of new music. She has played with the Colorado Summer Orchestra and was principal flutist of the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra. An active chamber musician, Ms. Wilson has performed with the ISU Faculty Ensembles at state, regional and national meetings and on several recordings.

Ling came to Indiana from Hong Kong and is studying at Indiana University Jacob School of Music under the direction of Mauricio Fuks. He finished his bachelor’s degree in music at IU and studied with Henryk Kowalski. Ling started learning the violin at age 6; he toured with Yip’s Children’s Choir of Hong Kong around the globe as a soloist. He performed concertos with the orchestra in Hong Kong, including a collaboration with the Hong Kong China Orchestra. He performed with the Callisto string ensemble, a new music chamber group in Chicago. Ling is the prize winner of numerous competitions in Hong Kong; he also was first in the concerto competition at IU and performed as a soloist with the IU concert orchestra.

Krasnican is director of the accompanying program at ISU and principal keyboardist with the THSO. She graduated with distinction from the Eastman School of Music, where she studied with Brooks Smith, Barry Snyder and Frank Glazer. After completing her master’s degree at Eastman, she worked with John Wustman of the University of Illinois and Menahem Pressler of the Beaux Arts Trio.

As a collaborative artist, she has worked with major performers across North America and Europe, including engagements with the Western Horn Symposium and several World Saxophone Congresses. She has performed as soloist in the “Piano Concerto” by Vincent Persichetti with the ISU Symphony Orchestra under the direction of the composer.

She has performed as a soloist with the THSO, premiering two piano concertos written for her by her husband, Daniel Powers. In 2005, she was featured on the CD “Spring and Fall,” a compilation of Powers’ chamber works and songs. The following year she collaborated with ISU alumna Sarah Stone on “Rejoice and Be Merry,” a Christmas CD featuring arrangements and original compositions by Powers. In February, she performed the complete works of Beethoven for cello and piano with THSO principal cellist Kurt Fowler.

On Saturday, a $5 ticket discount is available for all past band, orchestra or choral musicians. No matter when they played, those wearing school colors can receive a discount ticket at the door good toward the purchase of their concert ticket.

The THSO is in its 80th anniversary season. Tickets for the Saturday concert are available at the Hulman Center Ticket Office, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., through www.Ticket
