Turkey processor breaks ground on SW Indiana plant

VINCENNES, Ind. — Turkey processor Farbest Foods has broken ground on a $70 million plant in southeastern Indiana.

Gov. Mitch Daniels joined Farbest President Ted Seger for the groundbreaking today. The company said in a news release it expects the plant to have 360 workers when it begins production in January 2014 and possibly “significantly more” on a second shift.

The state offered Huntingburg-based Farbest $2.8 million in tax credits if the company meets its job promises.

The plant’s construction was delayed as local officials said the company scaled it back to cut $20 million in costs.

Farbest also said it will build a turkey feed mill in nearby Bruceville that will employ as many as 30 people.

Farbest currently processes about 10 million turkeys a year at plants in Huntingburg and Dubois.
