The Indiana Veterinary Medical Association presented this year's “One Welfare” Veterinary Service Award to Dr. Allen Lueking, of Sullivan, Jan. 31, during its annual meeting.

The IVMA “One Welfare” Veterinary Service Award is presented to an IVMA member who has demonstrated extraordinary care or service in improving the welfare of Indiana animals.

Lueking worked to secure funding to build a humane shelter in Sullivan County.

The shelter opened 3 years ago, and Lueking has worked with the staff and county officials to keep it operating.

In August 2009, the Humane Shelter of Sullivan County opened its doors in a new, heated and air-conditioned building with stainless steel cat and puppy cages, an isolation room, and 36 indoor kennel runs on an acre of land.

Since their doors have opened, the Humane Shelter of Sullivan County has cared for more than 7000 animals.

Lueking has donated his time to spay and neuter more than 3000 animals for adoption.

Lueking continues to donate his time, even after he has retired from his own veterinary practice.
