Garmong’s Hannum receives Sagamore honor

TERRE HAUTE — In a December ceremony at the Indiana Statehouse, Gov. Mike Pence named David Hannum, chairman/CEO of Garmong Construction, a Sagamore of the Wabash.

The Sagamore of the Wabash award is one of the most esteemed honors the governor of Indiana can bestow. It is a personal tribute usually given to those who have rendered a distinguished service to the state or to the governor. Among those who have received Sagamores have been astronauts, presidents, ambassadors, artists, musicians, politicians and ordinary citizens who have contributed greatly to our Hoosier heritage. The Sagamore of the Wabash award was created during the term of Gov. Ralph Gates, who served from 1945 to 1949.

Hannum provided eight years of leadership, from 2006 to 2013, on Indiana’s Fire and Building Safety Commission, and as chairman, refurbished all of the state’s building codes and renovated the construction plans review process while fostering open dialogue between the public and the Indiana Legislature. Additionally, he led the state’s response and reaction to the tragic State Fair collapse, and readied the state to safely host the Super Bowl only months later.

“A leader in western Indiana since 1989, for the last eight years all of Indiana has benefited from David’s public service, at a time when it was much needed. This award memorializes our state’s appreciation,” John Hill, executive director of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, said during the ceremony.

Garmong Construction was founded in 1923 in Terre Haute and also maintains an office in Indianapolis. Under Hannum’s leadership, Garmong has developed full service, in-house design capabilities, pioneered industrial design-build delivery within the west-central Indiana/east-central Illinois region, and created Garmong Development LLC to provide clients with site selection and financing alternatives. In 2004, Hannum became the chairman/CEO of Garmong and continues to be active in the growth of both companies.
